View Full Version : Asked about Superbit in new shop in Camberley....

Whent into Camberley on Saturday and noticed a new shop selling just DVD's and videos. Was looking through the stock when I was asked if a needed any help. I thought I would ask about Superbit and if they had a seperate section for them to which I got a rather strange answer.
"No mate there just mixed in with everything else, you'll just have to find them". I was then told that "Do you know what Platinum release Playstation games are, well thats what Superbit DVD's are, they're just movies that have been released before with a good sales record, then released again to make the companies even more money".
He mentioned nothing about the increased picture and sound quality associated with SUPERBIT and that "your average joe wouldnt be able to tell the difference between Superbit and regular anyway so I wouldnt bother mate".
Needless to say I didnt buy anything from there.

To a certain extent he is probably right, without a high quality setup the average person wouldn't notice any difference.
He was right about the sales side of it, it would be madness to release poor selling DVD's in superbit.
But you were right not to buy anything in the shop, there is nothing worse than jumped up sales staff talking down to you.

I didnt tell him what system I had before asking him as I wanted to hear what he had to say on the subject first. I didnt bother telling him after his response either as I think it would have been a waste of time!!!
Anyway, on a slightly different matter, what would you guys recommend as a really good Superbit release for me to buy as my first one to see what the hype is all about???

You could buy one of a movie that you already have to see whether you notice any difference.
I would probably recommend Das Boot or Fifth Element, depending on what region you go for.

Actually, to be fair, he knew more about Superbit than one might expect of many shop assistants. Although he had an opinion which maybe some don't share, nevertheless the underlying principles of what he said are about right.

perhaps it could work to your advantage, if he thinks superbit are just "platinum" releases, perhaps he'll sell them off at the same price as the regular version.. certainly worth checking out!

Its the new one opposite Ottakers the book store, I think its nextdoor to NEXT. It's got laminate wood floors and the till is at the back of the store to the right when looking in from the front. Sorry, cant remember the name of the store.

If it is Silvercreen then prepare to pay more for your film than in most other shops. Theres one near me and apart from one purchase that I believe to be mispriced every single film was on average priced 1 to 2 quid more than in other stores in the same shopping centre.
Also this particular shop seemed to be staffed by a group of McDonalds rejects. (No offence to staff members of McDonalds)
Of cause the above is only my personnal opinion :grin:

I went to the silverscreen in the trafford centre in machester and as the above post mentions they are overpriced a bit along the prices of HMV and Virgin. The only average priced DVD's were the ones that most shops are selling like the fox 5 star collection and warner £7.99 etc. You would never need to pay these prices when you have music zone who are very cheap but I find I can get my DVD's cheaper on paly and ebay

Dont you just feel like shouting at them "KNOW YOUR PRODUCT" especially to the ones on the shop floor asking if you need any help ;)
I have Gladiator in Superbit and standard dvd. Now while the Superbit version does look great, the differences aren't all that obvious. Perhaps if you have a 42" or bigger plasma, or projetion screen. I have read comments that suggest the Superbit dvds create more artefacting. If you're looking for a significant PQ increase you'd be better off being patient and wait for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

You don't half get harassed by staff in them Silver Screens!. I've only been in once and it will stay that way due to the over eager staff and high prices.
I'd only managed to step three foot before some woman asks Are you okay there sir?, me thinking yeah, I'm not having a heart attack or choking on a peanut but I could do with actually seeing what titles they have. Two minutes later the same bird comes up and asks "Are you getting on ok now sir?", felt like shouting I WAS GETTING ON FINE THE GODDAMNED FIRST TIME AS WELL UNTIL YOU CAME AND INTERRUPTED ME!, though im too polite so didn't lol.
Really stressful day it was aswel looking for Xmas presents and trying to avoid all the street vultures trying to sell alsorts of tat/collecting for various charities. There was even one of those fruit loops ranting on at the top of her voice about some end of the world dooms day BS!, normally I wouldn't like to see anyone getting abuse for a load of skater dudes but she really was asking for it.

Hehe that's a sign of a crap salesman. No doubt after you'd said 'No' he just stood there speechless like a muppet or sodded off back to the till. Next time, tell him to greet you with an open ended question that illicits more than a 'yes/no' response. Failling that I usually make a wisecrack or take the **** out of customers (with a big cheesey grin) - that usually initiates a non-product related conversation and once you've become their new best mate you can flog 'em something.
Cynical I know, but on 5% commission, you can't blame me. :clown:

Depends on the person I guess.
If you want me to buy something, NEVER approach me. As soon as I'm hassled by a salesman, it's highly rare I'll buy something unless I'm there with a specific person.
By saying "Doubtful" I'm referring to the fact that it's highly doubtful they could actually help me at all. If I want help, I have a tongue, I'll ask - until then, back off!! (Or something similar to back....)
Used to work in sales - hated every second of it and vowed never to do it again (touch wood 10 years later I haven't).
