Eternal Sunshine.....pants? [Archive]

{Flamesuit on}/ . . saw this at the weekend for the first time after really looking forward to it. I really like Jim Carrey too. I know that this film has its many supporters, and I know that it has just been given Acadamy Award nominations. But, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and quite frankly this film has no beauty for me.

In fact I'd say it was quite possibly one of the worst movies I have ever had the misfortune to sit through (IMHO of course :grin: ). Nearly turned it off about five times, but thought it must, must, get better somewhere, thought it might stop being boring, thought it might make me smile, or feel sad, ar anything other than feeling like it was a waste of two hours of my life. It didn't.

Anyone possibly feel the same way as me, or do I need this flamesuit on for a long time to come yet??

depends what you like really, I thought sixth sense was pants, but I love this film, real characters, interesting & original story, really gets your brain thinking about stuff

juniper, i think you missed the point of the film - which is all about memory and its impact upon you. its one of the cleverest films i've seen in a long while. but each to his/her own.

For the record i thought Last inTranslation last year was nothing more than average although everyone raved about it.

I got the point, it just didn't do it for me. It never got me 'caring' even what happened. Shows you how 'each his own' applies - I thought that Lost In Translation for example was a masterpiece - gripping, funny, leaves you thinking etc.

No offence but if you like Jim Carrey, perhaps you were expecting a Jim Carrey film. I can't stand him, but really enjoyed this film. (Hated Lost in Translation though)

I agree, I thought Eternal was awful (although my wife loved it).
Down to taste I suppose, because I loved Lost in Translation.

Folks, folks and even people. Eternal was my favourite movie of last year. A brilliant performance from Jim Carrey. A great story and most of all a beautiful piece of film. Granted my missus hated the thing....

I really liked it. I connected with it due to being dumped by my partner of 15 years last summer, so it would always be more emotionally involving as that's what the film's pretty much about. It made it difficult to watch in places but it's one that I keep going back to as each time I watch it there's stuff I never noticed before.

But then, no film is all things to all people.
For the record the only other Jim Carey film I've got any time for is Cable Guy. Which probably qualifies me for a straightjacket :zonked: And I didn't rate Lost In Translation at all.

Same here. I think Eternal Sunshine and The Truman Show are the only decent films Jim Carrey has ever done.

Everything else I've seen him in just made we want to stamp on his face. :mad:

Eternal sunshine was great as was Lost in Translation - IMO

They are "those" kind of films though I think where its love or hate - they either work for you or dont

Spotting a bit of a trend here (except for eas4uk) people who liked Eternal (me included) didn't like Lost In Translation (me included) Interesting.

Eternal has a clever, witty script, quirky, yet believable characters, extremely funny situations (imho of course), some unexpected Moments that make you think just that little bit more.
Echoing has been said before, i thought it was easily in the top5 movies of 2004, found Lost in Translation to be laboured, unfunny compared to Eternal, main reason being that Sophia Coppolas script is miles away from the genius of Charlie Kaufmann.

I also don't like any Carey film apart from Eternal and The Truman show.

I loved Eternal Sunshine, though some of the trailers apported it to a Jim Carey 'comedy', which is wasn't. In fact four people left the cinema during the film when I watched it. Each to their own.

This is all slightly bizarre really - I had no idea there would be a trend, and two camps. I wonder if there are any more? - e.g., although I really (as you know) didn't enjoy ESOTSM, but did enjoy Lost In Translation, I also really really enjoyed Man on Fire (but I know some folks who didn't, which is why I ask :) ). So what about you???

Loved Eternal Sunshine, it was one of the most original, quirky, thought provoking 'romantic' films i've ever seen, really surprised by it. :thumbsup:

And guess what.... Absolutely hated Lost in Translation, thought it was slow, ony made me chuckle a few times and the rest was pure tedium....! :boring:

I thought Man on Fire was at least 20 (maybe 30) minutes to long the time spent with the girl at the start was just too long it didn't need to be that long, other than that i really enjoyed - a real case of "more is less" for me.

I gotta say, I loved both!
LIT dealt with the mid-life crisis thing really well. What do you do when you wake up one day, and realise that life is passing you by, or you're stuck in an unfulfilling relationship? Tokyo provided the perfect backdrop - alien and exotic.
ESOTSM portrayed the despair of lost love, and the legnths people will go to to regain/protect that love. The 'hiding in memories' thing was genius, and shot beautifully.
If you've seen neither, check 'em out - can't promise you'll like them, but 2 of the most innovative films released in recent years.

ESOTSM is a very good film, The majority of Jim Carrey's usual fans don't 'get it' or were expecting the usual JC manic OTT entertainment which is not seen in this film.
IMO Lost in Translation is overhyped & is similar to In the Mood for Love which is superb

Wow, almost 2 full pages of posts before we got an elitist comment :p .

I ordered this for a mate off of DVD soon and it arrived today. Thought I'd watch it before I gave it to him but only got about 30 minutes into it before switching it off. Maybe it was the wrong time of day or I wasn't in the right mood but I really didn't care what was going on or how it was going to end. Got another copy arriving next week so may try again then.

People who like that sort of Jim Carey movie can watch them. I dont care. Eternal Sunshine is just not for that sort of movie goer.

If you did not like ESOTSM then you can always go back to watching Jim talking out of his ass in Ace Ventura while the rest of us appreciate this fantastic award winning film.

Oh Dear. I thought ESOTSM was awful, but still respect that others don't agree with me (I know I'm in the minority - one look at www.imdb.co.uk site lists it in their top 100 voted by browsers).
I quite like Carrey, and appreciate he did a good job on this, but to tar us with your post above is not clever.
Films are all about opinions. My wife loved this film, but hates The Godfather :suicide: so where does that place her in your theory ????

I agree also, probably 1 of the best Denzel Washington films I have seen, did not used to be a big fan of Denzel but this was a quality film.

I did not like "the Seige" thought he was a bit wooden and and the film was a bit of a letdown

Could be argued that ESOTSM is a film more appreciated by women than men.
then again do more men like Saving Private Ryan than women ?
Not sure what your geting at, as the whole point is that everyone has opinions about films, and you should not slate people for stating theirs. :confused: :god: :thumbsdow

I was really shocked when I didn't "love" both ESOTSM and Lost in Translation - as I really expected to love them. Kinda liked them, found them interesting, but not loved.
I'm 3/4 way through Angels In America at the mo and finding that harder going than expected (mind you, 6 hours is hard work!).

I think both ESOTSM and Lost in Translation are those films you really need to identify with at some level to really enjoy them.
'Lost in Translation' I found so funny, due to the fact that most of my life is spent in hotels away from home.
I liked both, thought Truman was great. The only other role I like JC in is as the riddler in 'Batman'
