Samsung have manufactured a 21" Oled screen

This is a great step forward in bringing this technology
sooner rather than later. As it is a far more superior screen than the current LCD in every respect. If you can bare to wait it will be worth it Clap

Yup, Rods&Cones, we.ve been keeping an eye out for these OLED screens and also the SED screens. We await with bated breath to see how long it'll be before they can produce 32"+ sets and at what price! Also await with interest reviews on said screens. Will they really be as good as we are being led to believe?

Does anyone know how much this screen is expected to cost or when they will become available. Anyone have any idea how long it has taken to get from something like 10" or 15" to this point that might give us an idea on development times

6.22 million pixels?!? 5000:1 contrast :thumbsup:
The sooner OLED & SED screen become available the better. Hopefully you won't have to sacrifice PQ for physical size like we all do with Plasma & LCD.

There is a small article in this months Digital Home magazine that mentions that current OLED screens only have a life of 2000 hours. Seiko-Epson are working on a 40" screen that has a life of 15000 hours (which is just over 5 years at 8 hours a day), hopefully by 2007. So I guess if they are cheap enough it might just be worth it.

It might be a while before these are consumer ready then.... Really needs to have 30-60000 hours lifespan.

Well if the price is right, the lifespan could be a secondary concern.
If these screens start to take off, then would the current LCD screens be developed further, or come down further in price - if they will be an inferior display?

As with plasma and LCD, I expect the price will be dictated by how many duds come off the production line and have to be binned at quality control. AFAIK about 40% of plasmas go in the bin thus the high prices. If the production processes for the new screens have the same inherent problems then the prices will be just as high to start with to cover the losses. :thumbsdow

Costs are going to be high also due to recouping the R&D money which will be quite high.

The 6.22 million pixels are actually 1920 x 1080 x 3. They're doing the stupid thing that Sharp started of counting 1 red/green/blue pixel as 3! It is really 2 million pixels. I bet the marketing guys where very pleased with themselves when they thought of that one.

What loss in picture quality comes with large LCD screens? Are you refering to the fact that large screen LCD TVs have lower resolution than smaller LCD monitors?

The pessimist in me says we'll still have to wait 3 to 5 years before we can buy OLED TVs.

I think it's fair to say that your next new display will be plasma/LCD but that your "next but one" display could well be OLED/SED.
Remember, early plasmas were horrendously expensive and had pretty poor PQ compared to what's available now.

i read the same thing in some HC mags and a few PC mags as well, its what made me decide to buy an lcd tv now, i hope to be upgrading to another screen in 4 years time any ways.

Apparently the SED screens should be out late this year! These are basically thousounds of small crt making the picture up. But most are puttng R&D into OLEDs... I'll have a look for the link later for all

I don't see much of a future for plasmas - two big manufacturers in Taiwan have announced they will shift all production to LCD and now that even 45" LCDs are available and 60" LCDs have been shown they can rival the size of plasmas.
Plasmas have improved and are pretty good nowadays, but I think the future belongs to LCD or OLED.
