maybe you could clear this up for me...I read the book some time ago but weren't all the killings in his head? Apart from the tramp? I found the book a chore to read and couldn't be bothered to sit through the movie on that basis.

Patrick Bateman, awesome. This has to be one of the most darkly funny films i have ever seen. I've not read the book myself but people tell me that its not supposed to be as funny as it is in the film, but who cares, still a top, top film.
Waiter - Would you like to see the specials sir?
Bateman - Not if you want to keep your spleen!
Priceless.

Patrick Bateman: Come on, Bryce. There are a lot more important problems than Sri Lanka to worry about.
Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your :censored: . Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

This film is a cult classic, the book is darker and lot more violent, but not required reading, anyone not liking this film, because they dont get it, can't you see the dark humour, the 80's obsession with greed, power and envy (the business card scene)? Or is another one of those 'i dont geddit' films not considered any good because you dont geddit? tch tch pity you, in that case Under Siege is a classic as theres nothing to get.

No, probably not. I've read the book and most of the other stuff written by Brett Easton Ellis, and unlike most of the people who I know who have seen this film and have not read the book think the film is absolute tat.

The book scared the living crap out of me. Didn't sleep properly for a week! I've got too vivid an imagination. If I hadn't read the book, I'd've enjoyed the film more. Quite a decent film, but not a patch on the book. Christian Bale for an Oscar. Hmmmm.

BATEMAN
You like Huey Lewis and the News?
OWEN
They're okay.
BATEMAN
Their early work was a little too New Wave for my
taste. But then Sports came out in 1983, I think they really
came into their own, commercially and artistically.
Bateman walks to his bathroom, taking a large ax out of the
shower. He takes two Valium.
BATEMAN
(Said partly from the bathroom)
The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of
consummate professionalism that gives the songs a big boost.
Bateman comes back out and leans the ax against the wall.
He walks to the foyer and puts on a raincoat, watching Owen
from behind ail the time.
BATEMAN
He's been compared to ELvis Costello but I think
Huey has a more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
Owen is absent-mindedly leafing through the Barneys
catalogue.
OWEN
Hey, Halberstam?
BATEMAN
Yes, Owen?
OWEN
Why are there copies of the Style section all over
the place? Do you have a dog? A chow or something?
BATEMAN
No, Owen.
OWEN
(Confused)
Is that a raincoat?
BATEMAN
Yes, it is.
Bateman moves to the CD player. He takes a CD out of its
case and slides it in the machine.
BATEMAN
In 1987 Huey released this, Fore!, their most
accomplished album. I think I heir undisputed masterpiece is
"HiP To Be Square," a song so catchy that most people probably
don't listen to the lyrics. But they should because it's not
just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of
trends. It's al~ a personal statement about the band itself.
Bateman puts on "Hip To Be Square."
BATEMAN crosses the room and picks up the ax.
We follow BATEMAN from behind as he walks up to Owen, the
ax raised over his head.
BATEMAN
Hey, Paul?
As Owen turns around, FROM OWEN'S POV we see Bateman swing
the ax toward his face.

i absolutely adore this film but my mate (who i bought the dvd off) couldnt stomach it at all,he just switched it off after a hour and said its the biggest pile of crap this side of baron munchaussen lol.the book is far darker and most of the scenes probably wouldnt have made it to film as most of the torture scenes in the book simply couldnt be put up on the big screen.the book is very hard going and as not much of a book reader myself i was surprised to find myself reading it again a few weeks ago.
the clues are all around the place that he is infact just a loser who doesnt actually have much pull in the office.if you listen to him talking in the restaurant to paul allen you will hear him say "Evelyn Williams.great arse goes out with that loser patrick bateman."and a few other little things before the ending where the lawyer thinks it was a practical joke when he rang with the confession and the lawyer just blows him off as soon as he knows he`s bateman.

Books are always superior. Name a film that bettered it's source novel. You can't.
It's an old adage but often true, that bad movies have been made from great books, while some pretty great movies have been made from below par source material.
Some examples of the latter:
The Godfather - the film is infinitely superior to the novel. A crowd pleasing potboiler of a novel transformed by Coppola into that rara avis, a work of cinematic art.
2001: A Space Odyssey - Clarke's novel comes undone by doggedly attempting to literalize what the film allows to unfold on an almost subliminal level. Bit of a unique situation as this is not a source novel nor an adaptation of the film, as Clarke wrote it concurrently while developing the screenplay with Kubrick. No matter - the film betters the book hands down.
Jaws - A decidely average, workmanlike book turned into a decidedly above average film. The film is far better structured than the novel, and succeeds in being more focused and taut than the book by jettisoning the flab of the narrative, namely the totally superfluous love story. The movie also greatly improves on Benchley's pretty inept characterization.
Psycho - Not one of Bloch's greatest works, but Hitchcock took the core themes and elevated the tale to another level altogether. Even the author admitted that the movie left the book a poor second.
Hollywood film noir is replete with examples of movies which vastly exceeded the (mainly) trashy pulp sources on which they were based.

Maybe not now but I'm sure he'll do Bond at some stage. I think he'd be brilliant!
I personally dont think he will play bond, seems the kind of actor who plays [of late anyway] dark challenging roles.

Sell your mode of transport, and start taking public transport. I never read so much in my life until I started taking the train to work. Course, it may not be an option depending on your commute, but it works for me.
Unfortunately, I have to take the tube every day. But the times I travel mean reading is pretty much of the question. I ‘m normally on the tube at 6am (which is spent sleeping :boring: ) and then back again around 18.30/19.00 (which is also spent sleeping! :boring: ) Far too tired to read, the most I can handle at times is the Metro!

I thought about that too but I'm sure in 10 years he'll be bored of that :P

American Pshyco is awesome and so Is Christian Bale. I aslo think he is highly underrated and he is one of my favourite actors. I think he's brilliant in Equilibrium. He should be a great Batman.

He should be a great Batman.
Well he definitely has the ability and the 'look' to do the character justice.

Hey all,
Totally off-thread request. I am running a PES champions league in another thread and wondered if someone would randomly type the numbers 1 to 12 in any order for me. This way I don't get accused of rigging fixtures!
Cheers guys
Much appreciated.

When I watched this film I didn't know anything about it beforehand. didn't know th story or the book or anything and I absolutely loved it! Amazingly unique. And when it ended I was thinking "No, this can't be the end, there has to be more"! And sadly there was, American Psycho 2. About as good a sequal as Cube 2...
