DV79 vs CD73

On purely CD replay how do the 2 compare. I'm tempted to get the cd73 and think about DVD later but I wonder if I saved a while longer(patience aint a strong point ) and got the DV79 if it would be as good if not better on CD replay whilst giving me a better picture than my current Sony DVD725d.
I was also tempted by the DV89's going for around £599 but the lack of HDMI input puts me off as I intend buying a HDMI equipped PLAZMA later on next year.

Well I can't compare the CD73 directly with the DV79 as I have only ever owned a DV27 and now a DV29. I did previously own a CD73 and it was a great CDP, but when I got the DV27 that was IMHO a better CDP than the CD73, so that got sold on. I now play all my CDs on the DV29 as I don't own a dedicated CDP. I have seen others say that the DV29 is almost as good as the CD33 and I'm sure I've also seen people say that the DV79 is between the CD82 & CD192. If this is correct then the DV79 will outperform the CD73 and therefore IMO you should wait and get the DV79.

Mark.

hmmmm you were supposed to say go for the cd73
Looks like I may have to resort to patience or during the saving period.
Thanks for your speedy reply.

Hi, I actually had a different slant on the same problem. I wanted an "all in one" solution for DVD and CD playback and thought the DV79 was the answer. I auditioned it against the CD73 an IMHO there is no comparison in sound quality. The CD73 was way better.

I thought to be on the safe side I would take them both home for the weekend (Thanks to Soundcraft in Ashford!) and give them a try in my environment. Immediately the same was true. The enjoyment I got from my existing CD collection with the CD73 was amazing. The timing/clarity/rythmn of the DV79 just wasn't the same. I also set the CD73 and DV79 up sided by side and asked my wife to compare (without telling her which was which). She listened to a couple of tracks on the DV79 but within 30 seconds of listening to the CD73 said "Thats the one you have got to buy, no question!"

The DV79 is a great DVD player though and I hooked it up to my projector via component and picture and sound were great, but if audio is a big thing for you (as it is me) there is only one answer.

Paul.

I agree -- I almost bought not the DV79 but the 89, looking for an all-in-one box. Demoed it at home next to my Linn Mimik and there's no comparison. I don't believe there's a DVD player out there than can hold a candle to a good dedicated CD player -- unless you're willing to pay a serious amount of money, in which case you might as well live with two high quality but separate components and pocket the change.

Thanks for the replys. I think I'd rather go for the CD73 given the above and I can't really justify the expense of the DV79 as I aint got a decent display yet. I've heard the CD73 and was well impressed by the fact that it was warmer yet even more detailed than mates CD72.
