I Want ONE!!!!!!!!!!!
What a shame it won't play BD-ROMs!
Steve
huh? BD Roms are supposed to be for PC's not for AV use!
This player will play BD video and BD-R disks. As well as DVD's
What's the difference between a BD video disc, and a BD ROM? surely they're the same. i.e. read only!?
Not necesarily. I beleive when CD-Roms first came out CD players couldnt read them?
BD-Roms are designed for PC use and may not (at first anyway) be compatible with BD-Video players.
Perhaps to stop people from copying stuff from their PCs to then play back on their Blu Ray players.
Makes sense really. I copy DVD's to DVD-R on my PC then play back those films on my DVD player.
(legaly bought DVD's of course and only copied for my own personal use.............. BAH, what do i care, i live in japan, you people cant touch me! muhahahahah)

BD-ROM is the term used for pre-recorded (i.e read only) Blu-ray discs. Therefore you would need another Blu-ray player if you want to watch those. From reading the players specification, it states that it only uses BD-RE discs. This makes sense as the BD-ROM standard has not been finalised yet. Why buy two machines when one will do the job in around 12 months time?
Steve
I see what you mean. If thats the case then i wont be buying that player.
Ill probably wait for Denon, Pioneer, or Marantz to release a propper high end Blu Ray player.

Do you know when that will be.
It is excellent that the new dvd hd format is starting to gain momentum
Its hard to say when stand alone playback machines will come out.
I guess when the format is better established and there is a wide selection of Blu Ray videos available.
Next year Sony's PS3 will come out supporting Blu Ray Play back.
When that happens we will see Sony picture releasing Blu Ray films.
Thats when other makers like Denon and Pioneer will start making their high end players.
These players will only play back so if theres no software for them to play then they wont come out.
There will also be recorders like the new Sharp recorder, but they dont specialize in playback.

How much is that going to cost though and it wont be over here for a few years yet will it?
Very smart though.
Well the PS3 will be out next year or the year after, so in theory everyone will have access to Blu Ray play back within a few years at no great cost.
Movies on Blu Ray will take longer i guess. All depends on what sony and all the other movie companies decide to do.
As I said, once the format is established, then we will see high end players.
For these players I would say at least 3 years.
Unless they are already making them now in anticipation!
As for cost, well in theory they shouldnt cost more than what todays DVD players cost. But there will alwas be high end expensive players and lower end cheaper players. To begin with all players will be expenisve, except the PS3!
