Phantom Menace R2 Picture Quality

Watched the R2 on Monday night, did notice that the brightness was a bit high in places. Didn't notice any other picture problems though.

I was not too impressed with PM Picture quality at all. Looks ok, but nothing special. 3/5 for Region One.

I think the most amazing transfer i've ever seen is The Rock CE :-)

I noticed the poor pic quality too,knowing lucasfilm they will release another version like the superbit collection and charge us for the pleasure,its happened before.

was watching a bit on a plasma screen in hmv the other day (i dind't order and play still haven'e got any more stock in ) i thought it was just the plasma screen, but it did seem especially grainy, which is why i'm waiting for a r1 copy. could be a false hope mind.

Reguarding The Rock CE are you refering to the R1 Criterion Collection???

The region 1 version appears to be much the same as the region 2. My R1 is grainy in places, and I agree that I would only give 3/5 for the picture. But, I have to add, that the sound is absolutely awesome...

Have to agree with the above - picture quality on region 4 disks also not good - I get faint horizonal lines / blockiness especially on the underwater scene. Not so evident in bright scenes.

But sound quality is very very good

Has anyone else had problems with brightness/contrast/colour changes on PM R2? In addition, I've noticed a lot of grain and some blocking. I'm using a Toshiba 40" rear projection TV and a Sony 735 DVD, via RGB Scart? If you're not sure, check the scene in the spaceship after they leave Tatooine and compare the colours to those when they arrive on Coruscant in the next scene.

I must admit that I thought that my R1 copy looked unusually 'grainy' at some pouints!

Thank God for that. I thought I was the only one and was going to return my R1 copy as faulty. What I want to know is, where did all these reviews drooling over the pristine picture quality of this disc come from? Maybe reviewers got different versions from us plebs.

Sounds a bit fishy to me all these picture problems with a disk that every review says is reference quality!!

Perhaps a mastering problem?

All the reviews mention a touch of grain and some edge enhancement. Perhaps the somewhat harsh posts on this and other threads can be put down to the weight of expectation on this release.

Another way I look at it is that I had to work the equivalent of about 50 minutes to afford to buy this movie; and while it may not be 'perfect', really, what is??

take all reviews of Star Wars films with a pinch of salt. Most likely the reviewers go to bed with their light sabres and hence lack any powers of discrimination when it comes to Lucas...

Well, not the impression I get from the 4 reviews; and I think that may well apply more to the more subjective elements anyway, rather than an objective assessment of sound & vision.

Well I dont actually see any grain, i just simply look at the picture and i don't go wow like i do with any other DVD.

Yes Gladiator, I'm talking about the Criterion Edition. That is one stunning picture :-)
