Are all copies of the same DVD film equal in picture and sound quality? In theory they should be, but I have seen posts in this and other forums that put this in doubt. What do you think?

They all come from the same master, so they should be identical. Defects can cause slight difference. And silent remasters (ie. secretly remastering a disc to fix a bug and to hide the need for a total recall of discs) can lead to different disc. Even remasters are different.

Example: Pathes Austin Powers. The first disc violated the maximum bitrate of the dvd spec (their dvd player emulator has it's tolerances set to high), this led to audio dropouts on many players. They remastered the disc and this had a slightly lower video bitrate.

Occasionally a bad batch can occur. (A few early batches of R1 Warner titles have this problem, with an affect similar to laser rot of laserdiscs)

As all the data for a dvd is stored in a digital format before a master disc is made all copies should be identical
