Canon Lens

Hi Everyone !!

Just wanted some adivce on lenses?? I just brought a canon 10D to start my digital experience. The question is, I have a sigma Lens and the guy told me it was for digital Canons but I was wondering if any Canon EF lens is ok with the 10D body or is there an actual difference ????
Also has anyone used thoses lenses with the large range like 28-300??? are they any good, I dont know anyone who has used them??

Thanks !!
Aaron

Hi Aaron,
All of the EF lenses will work with your 10D. The EF S lenses won't work as they are specifically for the 300D and the newer 20D.
Sigma,Tamron and a few others are all makers of lens' and as for the diference in each of them, well I guess thats as subjective as anything
Someone with more experience in lenses will come along to advise further

A good starting point maybe the PBASE website which has photo galleries indexed by lens used as well as camera bodies. Or you can search Google with the lens you are interested, like the 28-399mm

Usually the quality of the lens drops (unless paying serious money) plus your lowest aperture gets higher, so in winters darker days you'll struggle to use the full zoom without camera shake. Also need to take in to account the weight of the lens, with all that glass.....although then one can say the weight of several lenses would be more

Saying that if you are after convinience then you can't beat them. Used to have a similar range on an old Olympus OM1N film camera, purely for that reason.

So answer is the usual convinience vs quality debate

Cheers Dave

there's a review of the Tamron 28-300mm 3.5-6.3 XR Di in this months Photography Monthly - it gets a pretty good write up. It'd give a relative range of 45-480 on your 10D, is pretty light-weight and isn't too long so slower-speed, hand held shots at full zoom should be possible. But its f/ 6.3 at full zoom so you'll probably have to ramp up the ISO in less than bright situations.

there are plenty of good Sigma and Tamron lenses about - do a bit of reading on the DPReview forums and you'll soon pick up a few pointers.

Well I've been using the 300D with the standard 'kit' lens and a 'prosumer' Canon 75-300 Mk III.

Have a look at my results here

Not bad, but upgradeitus has got me already..the 75-300 has got to go, I'm saving hard for a 100-400 L series IS job...

Love the Pics !!!!

I have never really tried shooting planes, what shutter speed do you use to get the slight motion blur on the propellers? I have seen some where they stop them dead they must be using about 400 or more I guess, but I like them better with the blur!!

Do you sell your pictures ???

Still experimenting to get the best results, but less than 400 gives some prop blur, 400 and above for fast jets. I always try and use ISO 100 unless the light drops, hence the NEED for a professional series lens with image stabiliser!

I've had one offer to buy a picture so far, still waiting for some international company to ask for copyright as they need one for 100,000 calenders..
