Sky+ with ONE input

Hi,

I've looked back and haven't found the definitive answer to this question...

Will Sky+ work if I only have one cable coming from my dish?

I am in a block of flats with a communal dish and only one cable goes to each flat. Using a Stacker/Destacker doesn't appear to be possible.

I realise that I will lose the ability to record one channel while viewing another, but will the Sky+ box be able to deal with the lack of the 2nd input OK?

i.e. will the Sky+ box (or can it be set to) only use the single connected input for all recordings?

Or, does it continue to try and use the 2nd input for recordings, even though its not plugged in, and end up recording a blank screen...?

Or does it detect the absence of the 2nd input and not work at all?

Is anyone using Sky+ successfully in this configuration?

Thanks if anyone can tell me the answer to this!

Regards,
Ben

As far as I am aware you will be able to view Sky but NOT record without the 2nd input. It will in effect just act as a standard sky box.
The stacker / destacker still requires twin inputs at the LNB end.

It will function as a standard sky box, I know because I ran my sky + box with one connected cable for a while..... no dual recording of course...

ben gb,

why not get hold of a second dish with a single LNB and set it up inside your flat, you have a good chance of getting a reasonable signal in a flat situation being higher up away from other buildings etc, if you can get line of sight through a window then all the better, worth a go?

I cant see any reason why sky+ shouldn't work with 2 dishes? as long as you have 2 signals and 2 cables, (unless anyone knows better?)

No problem with single input - except....

Just to let you know that I currently run my sky+ box using only a single input as I transport the box between Scotland and Portugal and I only have a single LNB output on my dish in Portugal. The only problem that I have come across is when you want to carry out unattended recording. You can record any channel as long as the box is left on that channel but if you want to say record ITV at a certain time and then BBC at another time the box will try to switch to the second LNB for the recording of the BBC and will fail resulting in a failed recording. However, I have found a way around this by fooling the box into swapping back to LNB input 1. The way I do this is by inserting a false recording but you have to have at least enough time between programmes to allow the box to do the switch. Say you set the box to record a programme on ITV at 1900, you then want to record a programme at say 2100 on BBC1, to allow the box to do this or fool it into doing so you insert a false recording between the two say at 1945. The box will record ITV at 1900 then swap to LNB2 to record the false programme at 1945, it will find no input for LNB2 which will end up being a failed recording. It will then chop back to LNB1 input for recording the programme at 2100 for BBC1. It's a case of trial and error until you have sussed it out. But it works for me
