Would appreciate any help with the ones I've missed.

I've only seen a coupe, I can reccommend Of Freaks and Men, very dark comedy. I would like to see Battleship Potemkin, but generally Russian films dont get the coverage of other european films or asian.

Hi,

I like some Russian stuff, but a lot of it - as others have pointed out - don't get released to UK or US DVD.

I liked the original "Solaris" (1972) and "Battleship Potemkin", but haven't really seen any modern Russian titles. I think it's probably one of the most neglected countries, for film news.

With animation, however, the Russians do some really great stuff! Jan Svankmajer, for example, is awesome, if a very twisted guy! My kind of stuff!

Jan Svankmajer is a Czech not Russian.
Although I've met Yuri Norstein at festivals a few times but he doesn't speak English and I don't speak Russian , so it normally involves me buying him a drink and trying to chat up his frosty translator ( always fit looking girls ...naughty Yuri!)

Have any of you seen "Night watch"? It's a very good Russian Sci-Fi / Fantasy movie ("Lord of the Rings" meets "Prophecy"). It's been out on DVD for some time, but since Fox bought all American distribution rights, they have mandated to stop making NTSC formatted dvds of it. The disk has been slowly disappearing from even Russian stores in America. And Fox kept postponing the release until this week (limited release), while sequel "Day Watch" is already out in Russia. Ain't US movie studios great

pgmatg are you russian?

I'd been wanting to get Stalker http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/ for a while but never seem to get a good price on the dvd.

Also if you have any knowledge of this and where I can get it from I would like to watch it http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091341/

There was another film I wanted to see last year about a father returning home after a few years and I think he goes on a fishing trip with his sons, supposed to have been pretty good.

Regards

Only seen a few of these. I once sat through a triple bill of Eisenstein (Potemkin, Strike, October), which nearly finished me off altogether.

Stalker was a bit of a disappointment. There was a Tarkovsky season on the BBC some years back and I had been looking forward to seeing this. It's based on one of my favourite SF novels (Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. I thought the book was quite imaginative, but all I can remember about the film is a bloke lying on the ground with his head in a puddle. I guess that's Tarkovsky for you.

A great film I saw years ago (15 or more?) which I thought at first was Russian, but I now believe is actually Georgian (dubbed into Russian with English subtitles) is The Blue Mountains.

I watched a fair few Russian films while I was learning Russian, but rarely watch them any more. One I remember that I rather liked was Маленькая Вера (Little Vera). I particularly remember it because I met a member of the cast while I was in Moscow. I also remember an amusing old film about a guy who mistakes another town for his home town (and then another flat for his own) because all Russian towns (and flats) look the same! I have a feeling that was "С легким паром".

Ночной дозор (Night Watch) sounds interesting. But I was put off buying the DVD as it seems like it might be too gory for my taste.

Thanks for that, though I did catch the film on Film 4 recently, very good. Also managed to see Stalker, wow, I was totally engrossed in the scenery/background, now I realise where it was filmed I wonder of there were any after effects? I won't spoil it for those yet to see it, but it is pretty close to the book Roadside Picnic for all you sci-fi fans.

I'm also interested to hear of a russian film coming soon about Genghis Khan, having just read a great book about him, it ties in nicely, if it gets a release here.
