I have got calibrations sussed on my Panny P6 for colour & brightness but I can't figure out how to set the contrast using DVE (Pal).

Which test pattern do I use to set contrast and what do I look for?

You could go to the Snell and Wilcox MPEG DECODER test pattern in the 4:3 test patterns. You'll see in left middle section a white box with another box whiter box inside. Adjust contrast so you can see the box wthin the box. If you can see it at default contrast then I would leave it at that rather than turn it up.

When the two white boxes become one you are crushing white detail and contrast is too high. On some devices it's impossible to get them to become one....but it's still possible to have too high a contrast. On a set like that you may find that at maximum contrast the white boxes are distinct but if you then looked at a bright white image you may find it a bit yellow........If this happens turn the contrast back own until the white looks whiter (probably around the default....)

Doesnt dve explain as you go along what pattern to use for sharpness and contrast ect. I thought it was the pluge? pattern. you can find this on the basic set up walk through, or is it different for plasmas?

Standard pluge is no use for plasma. You don't get blooming with plasma as the phosphor is encapsulated and cannot expand and bloom. Instead what you get is a crushing of the dynamic range of the processing causing crushing of detail. As I have explained though with some digital processing you don't even get that artefact and instead you get mad changes in greyscale and uniformity and gamma

Just in case you didn't know there are guys who can do this calibration stuff to a high level of performance if you want ;)

Gordon, I couldn't find that pattern on the DVE dvd - do you have a title/chapter number for it...

TITLE: PROGRAMME MENU: REFERENCE MATERIAL: 1.33:1 TEST PATTERNS. then skip forward about3 or 4 and you shold be there. It's actually a whte stripe ini a white box and a black stripe in a black box. You can tell it's the correct pattern as there will be a sponning 3d anmated snell and wilcox logo in top right quadrant of the pattern.

Sorry Gordon but I am missing something here...

I got the test pattern you described above (including the spinning logo) but there were no stripes/boxes as you indicated. I will have to post a photo of the pattern to make sure we are both talking about the same one - I am looking at Title 15 Chapter 6 "Snell & Wilcox Zone Plate Test Pattern, field rate" on Digital Video Essentials PAL Component (2003)

Sounds like the wrong pattern to me. Youre looking at one wiith a bouncing ball ini it....I think. Give me a mo and I'll find it on my disc and see what title chapter is.

title 15 chapter 6 is what it says on my DV79. Immediately after it there's a black and white flashing pattern.

Left hand side of the pattern. Top is white stripe in white background bottom is black stripe in black box. There are LOTS of little individual patterns on this. Concentric circles in the middle colour bars etc..
