a quick word to the not so wise...................

when collecting my R1 boxset from our main post office and handing over my £10 duty charge the cheeky chappie postie informed me that anything ordered from play.com or CDwow with a value of 18.99 or more has a 90% chance of being stopped by customs....trust me he said we see tons of them!!!!

Nail in the coffin for play i'm affraid their prices reflect that of HMV at the mo.......

everything i've ordered from play.com (NOT playUSA) and exceeded the £18
mark, was labeled 'customs paid', so unless they haven't changed that in the last week i see no reason why you should pay customs on orders from play.com

Got an order a few weeks back from play.com for £29.99 and it came with a sticker on saying duty paid. I think he meant playusa.com

As it's againt the law to import region 1 dvds into the EU
I love it when customs want the VAT.
Living off immoral earnings is the offence that comes to mind.

Personal imports are alllowed its is distribution of R1 from within EU (outside R1 region actually). Pressing plants all over the world will press all regions then ship to the region for distribution.

Play.com are located in the EU so they shouldn't be subject to any customs charges.

Got buffy series 6 from play this morning, £29.99 on the envelope and UK VAT PAID!!!!
SO it seems we are paying VAT Directly and not the extra PO charge!!!

I wonder where you got that little snippet from?

It's illegal to sell uncertified video material in the UK and it's in breach of copyright to distribute outside of the licenced territory.

It may be illegal to import and/or use obscene material, but little stuff actually falls into that category, and the odd nunchuka or headbutt or drowned rat is likely to be categorised as obscene.

UK DVDs from Play.com have pre-paid HMCustoms for years. Their Region 1 DVDs can have charges though.

Jersey/Play.com are not 'located' the EU. They are a part of the UK but so is the Falkland Islands. Jersey have laws that are in line with the EU/UK but that doesn't necassarily make them a member. We all saw recently when SplashDVD went tits' up, they have their own 'way' of doing things. I think it's got something to do with them thinking they were being invaded by the Germans or something

I would not listen to some minion at the Royal Mail for HMCustoms policy. We here know more than him.

As it's againt the law to import region 1 dvds into the EU.

Rubbish. I bet UK DVD distributors would love that.

Thank you for your comprehension.

Never in my dealings with Play.com have I been charged anything extra. I didn't even think it was possible to charge import tax from Jersey, I don't recall ever having to go through customs when I've been over there for a day, hell you don't even need a passport! Not to mention that they have warehouses/offices on mainland UK now, I forget where though.

As for PlayUSA I don't tend to use them so much anymore, but when I do I've never been charged. The only time I have been charged was when I bought the R1 Die Hard boxset from Play when they did R1 and R2 together, I sent an e-mail to complain and they apologised and refunded my card for the amount!

PlayUSA have a disclaimer on certain titles depending on where they sourced from and where how much they cost. I have no examples on my at present, but if you order a DVD and are charged customs on an item that didn't contain the warning then send them an e-mail and you stand a good chance of being refunded, though as I say my experience was before the site split, but I'm sure the same applies.

It's the same with their RCE discs, assuming that your DVD can't play them if you get one home and it's RCE but the info on the website didn't carry the RCE warning then you are entitled to a refund...

thats a fair point, i think altogether about 10 of them have been over £18.00, so that still pretty good, i bet i get wacked on my next order with them now. :suicide:

On another note, has anyone oticed that since the play site split their R1 disks are more expensive.

Bumble was referring to www.playusa.com and not www.play.com as if you read his original post he mentions a REGION 1 box set, and paying duty on that, so why you are even mentioning paying import tax on items from www.play.com is beyond me.

www.playusa.com is just too expensive to use these days anyway - I was only ever stung on the Rocky boxset

9 times out of 10 cdwow is cheaper - and dvdsoon is better still (as long as its not a back title or the infamous MGM offer  )
