I've just received this dvd - I haven't had chance to watch it yet, but on the back is says that it isn't just the extra 44 minutes (or what ever), but its a total re-think, re-edit etc of the movie...just how much different is it from the original..?

cheers

You get some dinky extra scenes, more playboy bunnies, the long (and not neccessarily useful) French plantation scene and more Kurz at the end. I like the plantation scene- it mimicks the Kurz speech on will and method (although most of it is in french with Willard straring a bit)but the test audiences hated it which is why it went in the first place. This is my favourite film of all time so I can't give an impartial comment on it but I reckon it is worth it.

Just my opinion, but I thought the original was better...maybe a case of best not to fix something that isn't broken.
Without spoiling it,the film was long in any case, but the extra 44 minutes don't add a great deal except time, and I've tended to skip the extra bit whenever I watch it.
The extra 44 minutes are a slab in the middle of the film approximately, and a few other bits,so not so much a re-think,as just including something that originally made the cutting room floor.
Still a magnificent film.

Exactly: it should be an alternate version to sit alongside the existing cut, not replacing it (as it has on dvd):

Should be part of a 3-disc set with Original, Redux and Hearts of Darkness.
I thought Redux made the film considerably more (pointlessly) long-winded and some scenes (the Bunnies) detracted from the tone appreciably.

It's not definitive, no matter what Coppola says.

That's a very good point, and I also wish that he'd done this when re-issuing the film after all those years.
As I've said,I still think the original cut was the best of the two, although it's still a great piece of film-making.

in Hearts of Darkness, Coppola's wife says it's him that hated the plantation scene because he just couldn't get it the way he wanted, it was during a period of the filming when everything went wrong and he got more and more frustrated and bogged down as time went on. I can understand why he dropped it, but I can see why he's reinserted it aswell.
I like both versions, especially as I'd always wanted to see the whole plantation sequence after watching the HOD documentary, but the original theatrical version definitely has a darker tone to it, moves at a much faster pace and doesn't seem as episodic in its structure
