View Full Version : Ever bought a DVD you knew you didn't like?
I know this sounds stupid, but i own several DVD's of which i don't actually like or have any desire to watch like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Bridget Jones Diary to name a couple. I'm also tempted to buy Hulk cos it's £6.99 for the special edition, even though i more or less despised the movie. Sometimes it's the pretty packaging, sometimes it's the fact that the movie is a "classic" so i feel i should own it regardless of my personal opinion, and sometimes its the fact that i think i should own movies other people might want to watch if they come round (girls specifically). Well i suppose it takes a certain craziness to own over 500 dvd's in the first place...
anyone else done the same?

No but I have owned a DVD that I thought would be OK, but upon watching discovered it was embarrassingly poor.
That was Charlie's Angels 2. The first one was good fun but the 2nd was just complete crap, not just bad but shockingly bad. Couldn't even flog it on Ebay, it was that bad. Ended up giving it away.

heh, i thought it was ok, you just gotta turn your brain off for a while.. except for the cruciate ligament scene, that was just ridiculous!

Have watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and found it annoyingly tedious, though fortunately it was one I bought for the daughter.
For myself there’s Solaris, Insomnia (fell asleep both times I tried to watch it) and latterly Cold Mountain.
Yes I once bought Star Trek Insurrection R2 purely for the crap PQ, even though I already owned the R1 version (it wasn't crap enough. :))

I've just bought the R3 4 disc Director's Cut of Dances With Wolves. I have never seen it, nor had any desire to see it, and the thought of watching a 4 hour Western is quite unappealing, but it's got a nice fake leather cover, with a little feather attached! :grin: I also bought Unforgiven (10th Anniversary SE). I have seen it and hated it, but thought it might be OK second time around. Further, I bought Matrix Revolutions, already thinking Reloaded was crap, and hearing from several sources that Revolutions was worse, but you've got to have them all. I'll probably get the 9 disc box set as well! :rolleyes:

Probably had too high expectations, Charlie Kaufman writing credits,
Soderbergh producer, all-star cast, i think it failed on many if not all levels.
The quirkiness was there but none of the characters was interesting enough
to keep me interested in what weird things might happen to him/her.
The acting is good but there isn't really anything in the film that keeps you gripped or even interested enough, to really like the film.
For me it fails as a comedy as well because apart from some good costume design and the odd situational humor there is nothing funny either.
Anyways somebody might come along and say he/she liked it....

I knowingly bought "Planet of the Apes", the terrible Tim Burton version, purely because it had an interesting bunch of extras and DTS sound - I know, I know - I'm a dts fanboy ;)
Great PQ and sound, but that still doesn't redeem the movie.

I bought the Saving Private Ryan (DTS) purely for the beach landing scene, I can't stand Tom Hanks or the film otherwise. It was only £6.99 though so I suppose it's not too bad.
I haven't bought anything that I knowingly hate but I have bought DVDs that I don't regard to highly just to complete a collection (Buffy season five and six, season seven as well except I wanted that for the final ever Buffy episode)
Mostly I buy films that I think I want to see and usually try to sell the ones that prove to be crap.
To be honest I wasn't impressed with Charlie's Angels but preferred full throttle even though I pretty much thought it was crap... I didn't buy either!
I don't buy a something just because it's going to contain a whole bunch of extras. Usually I never watch any of them anyway. I usually buy the film because I like it or I think I will like it, sometimes I buy a second copy down the line because it has DTS and once purely for an uncut version.
i own "the dentist" and "the dentist 2" but i cant bring myself to watch them, they sound like they'll be so bad!

I only buy DVD's I know I like.
Lately, I have been buying DVD's to replace my laserdisc collection. The last one was the 2 disc version of The Abyss for £7.99. The LD cost me £35 at the time. :eek:

I can understand Bridget Jones. I never ever want to see that. I like the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and have it on DVD. I have the video of the original and have no intention of watching that version again.

Bought Spawn on peoples recommendations, couldnt wait for it to finish. Donnie Darko was another. No plans to watch either again.

Due to my thirst for film knowledge I am inclined to buy Special Ed's of medicore titles just for the extras, commentaries preferred.

Seeing how I bought films I was ambivalent about on LD for thirty knicker a time, shelling out £4-5 on second-hand/promo dvds doesn't seem so bad (indeed I've bought stuff I thought was going to be dead poor cheap (HULK) and quite liked them).
Also, if I see stuff that's £4-5 that I haven't seen, I'll normally buy it since that's only a little over the price of a rental.

i bought ID4 for the sound - even though its woefully bad. but i have to say i reallyed bridget jones, thought it was well funny. i'd much rather watch it than something like Torque or xXx or 2 crap and 2 crapper.

Liam, welcome dude :smashin: you'll find this forum to be like all the others, opinionated, self serving and lacking in moral fibre. No not really!! mostly its populated by adults that dont take the pi*s. we have our fare share of "handbags and 40 paces style rows" - but its my fav place on the web.
