have a look in the av furniture thread
theres tons of people like myself who have had the same problem.
I use Caselogic wallets, they hold up to 300 or so. You won't believe the space you gain when you do this. I just put all my boxes in storage upstairs.

Maki, are they the 264 (or so) capacity wallets for CDs. Here's an Amazon link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005ATMG/qid=1087917211/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_11_3/026-5346423-9307630) Do they cause any damage? Anyone else got any experience with these wallets for DVD storage - I've run out of space....

I bought a Sharper Image Power Tower DVD rack. It only holds 80 DVD's, but looks incredibly cool. You can rotate your collection clockwise or anti-clockwise at the touch of a button to give you quick access to your titles. There's also a bright LED light to aluminate your DVD covers, which is handy for a dark H/C. It may not hold as many as some, but it's guranteed to impress your friends.

I use these Ikea units each hold roughly 80 DVDs.
:)
Banshee, yes these are the wallets, a newer model and sounds a bit better for organising. Read the reviews on Amazon and that about sums it all up. You won't look back... I promise. I have not noticed any damaged caused and indeed the wallet internals are of a soft synthetic material.
If you intend to keep on buying DVD's and CD's... which you will! This is the only answer, as a permanant structure will fill up again in no time and you will be back on here again!
At the end of the day it's your choice but I know where my money would go and a lot less than on a storage unit too!

popeye, i've always thought they looked quite cool but i'm just wondering what you do about dvd box sets like alien quadrilogy etc with the fold out cases (digipacks?).. does the unit support them as well (cant see how?) or do you just buy a lot of blank cases and put the discs in those or keep any boxsets like that on a seperate shelf?

I've got four of these, either side of the TV and two on top of each other,
quite space saving.
(got a differenet colour though  )

I only put Amaray case DVD's in my Power Tower. It can take snapper cases and some digi-packs, but I think it looks smarter when all the cases are the same. The Power Tower only represents a small part of my collection. The rest of my DVD's including box sets etc are stored in Ikea cabinets from the 'Billy' range!
