Question Satelite Navigation \ GPS \ Grid Reference #

Hi all

I own this car satelite navigation system : Becker Traffic Pro.
In addition to being an excellent car stereo it helps me find my way
to destinations via postcodes, addresses etc.

But something that's confused me is : GPS & Grid Ref numbers

How does this relate to Satelite navigation and how can I use it for my benefit?
Would i need to upgrade my Sat Nav system to use it?

This weekend I shall be travelling to the Lake District by car.
After viewing a variety of brochures and websites, they seem to state :
Grid reference numbers eg : Grid Ref 89: NY 220290

Please advise

Shaz
