black and white kill bill bits

I have not seen kill bill yet and looking to buy the dvd realize there is part in black and white.
Is this how its supposed to be? and does it ( if you have the japanese version ) look better in colour or black and white?
I know there is a version with colour fights, but there must be a reason they were made b/w for R2 releases?

I read in a review that Tarentino made the scenes black and white to get all the splattering blood past the censors. I suppose it's better than having the scenes cut completely

I'm awaiting my Japanese version from CD-WOW, so couldn't say whether it's worth the extra money yet, but I can't see how it won't be better.

The only downside with the disc is that you have to switch the subtitles on during the japanese parts, or leave them on all the time.

My take on the House of Blue leaves bit:

It was decided it should be in b/w to get it past the US censors, whether the MPAA actually saw the colour bit, i don't know.

I don't believe the BBFC (UK) ever saw the colour bit to rate it.
The Japanese are used to that kind of violence so got the full colour (& longer, but I believe some cuts were for Japanese humour) version.

The colour version makes it easier to see what is going on as life is colour.

The b/w version is just cool the way it changes.

I am keeping both versions.

I have to concur... it makes a big difference in colour. That's not just because I spent a bit extra on it, I've shown it to friends and they all agree. The small additions to the rest of the film make a difference too. :cool:
