Old films - New sound!!

Just watched 'Superman the movie' on my new Denon 2900 player connected to 42" Hitachi plasma. What a great film that was, but more to the point what about the remixed 5.1 audio?!!! That has to be the best old film with remixed audio I've heard and just shows what can be done with some effort, and admittedly the budget to do it. The people responsible for the James Bond re-releases ought to sit up and take notice. Anyway, made me think, what is anyone elses favourite old film with new audio??

Indiana Jones Trilogy blew me away. It has better sound than most of my new DVDs!!

Indiana Jones trilogy was a letdown, i like my audio overcooked with the surround speakers working overtime, best remix for me was The Lion King :)

For films like Star Wars, Indy, Superman(?) that were originally mixed with Dolby Stereo surround then they should be able to make a decent 5.1 mix from it, but for older films that were made in mono then on the whole they're pretty awful. Terminator being the exception.

Epics like Ben Hur, Spartacus, Lawrence etc sound really poor in '5.1 terms'. They're better off leaving them in mono, even if some were originally multi-tracked like Ben Hur.

Platoon...only released in cinemas in Dolby Spectral...but in 5.1 on DVD...and very good it is to.:thumbsup:

Just thought i would throw that arguement in. There are some excellent remixes out there.

I think you should have the choice...personally, I like to watch films the way they were made. However, I think that viewing Superman for the first time in 5.1 was a new experience. Maybe a disc should have the original mix on as well as the new version...?
Can you imagine Frankenstein from 1933 in DD5.1...? The sound wouldn't match what is on the screen...however, with Superman I think it did.
Have to disagree about Jaws though...didn't sound right in DD or dts 5.1...the dynamics were all wrong.

You should have a choice of the original (mono,stereo) and the remixed soundtrack.
Like the new special edition of The Good,the bad and the ugly.
They cram 3 5.1 remixes on it in R2 land and no original mix.
At least they put the original on the R1 version + the remixed one.
Guess which version i bought????

No, unless a multi-tracked master exists (ie some 70mm films)

I'd rather have my audio unadulterated which is why I've never seen the need for DD PLII.

Same reason I'd like to see stuff in its OAR. Never quite understood the double standards - people want OAR, but also want DTS ES remixes - how does that work???!

I've held on to my old R1 TGTBATU with it's English mono audio track (only Italian mono on the new R1), as it's the only way I remember seeing the film and there was nothing wrong with it at all as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure I'd want to see it subtitled, it just wouldn't feel right at all to me.... the bad dubbing suits it perfectly. Apparently it's all bad ADR looping on the Italian track aswell though.

I've a feeling someone'll get me the R2 for my birthday in a few weeks though, but I'll hang on to the old R1 anyway, probably just use the new one for the extras.

i think the 'as the director intended' issue is a bit flaky for sound..... after all none of us have the speaker arrays which the directors often would have envisaged being used....

Someone mentioned Star Wars on laserdisc...but no one's mentioned it since Phil threw in the director intended argument...will the DVD's be tampered with even more and given an EX mix...I've not seen anything on this. I'm not that excited TBH - would have prefered the originals anyway...

the digital bits had a quote from Lucasfilm's public relations guy about a week or 2 ago, talking at some kind of convention, and he said the versions of the original trilogy that are coming out are "the films as George envisions them today", which they took to mean he's gone beyond his "special editions" and tampered some more. I've heard they're changing the bit where we get to see Vaders face at the end of Jedi to make him more like Hayden Christiansen.

I don't have a problem with the director giving a film a new sound mix (a little hard in Sergio Leone's case though), as long as there's the option for the original there aswell. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'd prefer to see the seal of approval from the director if possible, but even so, George Lucas is proof that the director isn't always right

What always amazes me is how they managed to get 5.1 sound out of the Wizard of Oz.It is still a favourite in this house but the new "mix" leaves a lot to be desired.

Dirty Harry SE was remixed into DD 5.1 and it sounds great.

Robocop is another disk that has been remixed into DD 5.1.

I am pritty sure Die Hard is one as well, that also sounds great.

Also Predator SE was remixed into DD 5.1 and DTS.

Also Mad Max 2 has a DD 5.1 track.

RoboCop sounds terrible and very very harsh sounding with poor bloated sounding bass.

I have always wanted to check out the remixed aussie version of Mad Max which has been remixed into DTS does anyone have it and what are their thoughts on the remix ?
