Netgem's USB connection

Hi there

Can anyone tell me the fastest USB Ethernet adapter that's available for the Netgem i-Player? I want to maintain the 100Mbps connection I currently have on my network. The Dlink Dub-E100 looks like a good one to get and I believe it's one of the Netgem recommendations but is it as good as it sounds? Has anyone had any problems with this one? Is there a better one out there?

I tried the E100, but it didn't work at the time. I swapped it for the 10Mbps version and that worked fine. That was ages ago though - there's been software updates since then.

This thread shows someone has used the E100 with some success.

I think the limiting factor here is the USB 1 interface on the Netgem. The fastest throughput would be about 12Mbs IIRC.

Agree with Tee Tee - I don't think the USB will handle full 100Mbps. Besides, I can't see that it needs it. About the most demanding thing it can do over it's net connection is stream music, and you don't need much bandwidth for that.

I'm using a Belkin USB adaptor with my Netgem which handles supposedly 10 & 100, although as already stated, the limiting factor here will be the USB connection on the Netgem.

I also tried it with my laptop and it worked out of the box (as you would expect). My laptop's NIC doesn't seem to pick up IP addresses via DHCP (when upgrading the router firmware you have to use a cable, not wireless) so this is ideal for this as well.

Unfortunately, both guys are right, clintc.

Soon after buying my Netgem last year, I noticed the fact that everything had to squeeeeeeze into that little USB port passed most Netgem Forum members by.

The majority wanted to use the box as a 'media centre', chucking everything they could through the theoretical 12Mbps 'pipe'.

As it happens, my adapter should arrive tomorrow. Obviously, I can't recommend it yet; but it's the Belkin F5D5050. It's an adapter that was on Netgem's compatibility list when I started looking into the box, last year - and one that seemed 'reliable', in terms of setting-up. Having said that, I shouldn't think there's much between brands.

If it is of interest, unlike last year, I've only found the Belkin here, here and here - though I'm not familiar with the latter two on-line stores and the second of the three places was approximately 50% more expensive than the first one!

Of course, there may be other places - but I gave up clickin'!
