amazon.co.jp with the slowest economy shipping.. I think they are still selling it 20% off list.. also you do not have to pay some domestic tax.. hence the price on screen seems to go down even further once you get to checkout.

It has no English subs in it whatsoever and its the cut version ie: black and white scenes.. Have a look on the Kill Bill 7 page thread..

as far as i know the jpn has english subs though supposedly not auto in the film.. i.e you would have to turn them on..

Other option maybe the Korean R3.. try www.koreandvds.com

the trouble with any R3 release is they will not feature any of the burnt english subtitles. Having to turn them on and off in the appropriate places would be a major pain in the back side.

I would recommend getting the cheapest possible version of this film just now & then hold on for the delux directors cut special edition before everyone goes insane with confusion...you know you're all going to buy it again when it's rereleased..I know I am:grin:

Lets learn from the LOTR discs, aliens discs, flipper discs and so on of this world and be patient...:smoke:

I thought about ordering the Uncut version from there but it states a running time of 111mins and I thought the fully Uncut Japanese release was 113mins?

Does that mean it is still missing footage that the Region 2 Japanese release has?

Gutted,

I ordered R3 Kill Bill Volume One (Uncut: Hong Kong & Japan Cinematic Version) on the 7th at 2:45 in the afternoon

Today I got an email during the night saying it’s been sent from CDWOW and now I’ve just read this thread saying it’s cut etc. What a Cock-up.

How easy is to return goods to CDWOW and do they credit your card or give vouchers etc?

I already had the R! on order but like most of us, you prefer to see an uncut version.

Has CDWOW made a statement about this Cock-up? You would think that we would have received an email before despatching to customers and asking if they still want the R3. :( :thumbsdow

Email CD wow and tell them you will be returning it. They accept why you are and send you a freepost envelope to return it in. Thats customer care of the top quality to me!

I am tempted to get the Thai version but I am a little confused about the description on their site, it says its PAL and 133mins long but if it was PAL wouldnt it be more like 110mins due to PAL speed up?

Oh, cheers!! Just to confuse me even more!   To be honest, I've got past the stage of caring. I'll find out whether it's PAL or NTSC when I get it. As long as it's the uncut version, I don't mind.

Check out this version on ebay...

Says its the Region 3 Uncut Japanese release with 2mins of extra footage which also has French 5.1 Sound, is this guy making it all up or does he know of a version we dont?

Simon6776
09-04-2004, 10:35 PM
Could be a boot. Doesn't say if it's PAL or NTSC, but states 111 minutes, which isn't the magic 113 minutes, unless it's 111 minutes on PAL.

If you are interested in the Region 3 Thai release you might want to check out www.versatiledisc.co.uk who are based in the UK and are offering it for £15.99 delivered, never heard of them before but might be worth a try.

In fairness to CD Wow, they were caught out as well by this, as they thought they were getting the uncut version. If you want to return your copy, they will send you a pre-paid envelope. Their customer service is second to none, and they are generally one of the better companies to deal with, and have some superb bargains. Don't let this one cock up put you off using them again. :)

it's worth noting that this is way beyond CD wows control, especially when you consider Hong Kong did get the "asian" or "uncut" version of the film on its theatrical release, same as Japan, and that it was a logical assumption that the DVD release would be the same version.... unfortunately Miramax/Buena Vista/Disney decided to release the same "western" version as we got on DVD over here. Madness.

I'll track down the link to some gabbing from Tarantino (I found it through a link at bulletsnbabes) where he's clearly stated his intention to release the uncut version in the west in the future. He personally retained the rights to the "uncut Japanese/asian version", which he's intending to splice together with part 2 to make his 3 hour+ epic that he's looking to send out on an unrated or NC-17 arthouse theatrical tour. Given how much more restrictive the R rating is compared to the UK 18, I'd be surprised if he didn't release it over here and it passed no hassle with an 18.

sorry if everyone already knows this.... these Kill Bill threads are a devil to read through to find out what exactly people do or don't know

figrin_dan
14-04-2004, 7:31 AM
From http://www.hive4media.com

“We did a special version for Japan that’s only been shown in Japan and Hong Kong, and I kept the rights to that,” Tarantino said. “So after Kill Bill 2 has come out and does everything it’s going to do [at the box office] … just like they did with Once Upon A Time in America when they came out with that four-hour version, I’ll release the Japanese version that’s never been seen outside of Hong Kong and Japan. I’ll put the Japanese version together [with Volume 2] like I would if it was one complete movie, and then I'll release that throughout America and Europe in arthouse engagements.”

last time i ordered from thailand it took about a week iirc?
if its from dvdsfromasia, i think he sends them to england then gets his mates to post them on from here (or thats how my ong bak arrived) although he was in france! and the discs come from thailand:confused:

I understand all the prints used for the transfer had no burnt in subs, regardless of region code, so if you get a version from a non english speaking country like Japan or Thailand you have to manually turn on the subtitles at various points through the film or leave them on all the time... or do without them altogether don't you? From memory, Kill Bill v.1's got at least half the dialogue in Jap hasn't it?
People are going to need some quick thumb action if they don't want the subs onscreen all the time aren't they?

 :zonked:

this one's a real brainmelter. Doesn't seem to be any really good way round this... unless I'm completely mistaken with all this:suicide:

Well if items sent via airmail from Hong Kong only take 3 days shouldnt it take the same amount of time from Thailand or do they have a worse postal service?

To help with some more possible confusion, ;), the forums at koreandvds state that the korean version will be uncut and will feature the black and white sequence. I take it from that they mean that it will be the western cut (no further cuts imposed).

Craig from Movietyme mentioned on their forums that he'll review a copy of the Jap disc as soon as they receive it there to make sure that it's the full colour blood and guts version before shipping. A very wise decision and good piece of customer service methinks !!! :smashin:

Most of the second half of this film is in Japanese and in key areas aswell. If I hadn't seen it at the cinema and knew what was being said it would have a nightmare.

The fights do seem even better second around

the subtitle issue will be the same for other languages too - like English.

eg, you'll need player subtitles when they are speaking Japanese, but not when they are speaking English.

So I'd expect the English language version to have two sets of subtitles - one on all the time, the other only when Japanese is being spoken (this last one would most likely be selected by default)

So in that case, the Japanese one would probably only have English subtitles on full time?

Simon6776
16-04-2004, 8:35 AM
If the Thai version is the same as the Jap version, I still think that English subs will be burnt in at the appropriate places, given the amount of English speaking people over there.

Indiana Jones
16-04-2004, 9:35 AM
Well someone has watched the Thai release and they have confirmed it is the same as the Japanese Uncut version with extra footage and no b/w scenes but they didnt mention whether or not there were any burnt in subtitles.

The person on eBay selling the R3 Thai release for £15.49 is posting on the DVD Reviewer Forum and yesterday he wrote this...

Okay to add to my original post. My supplier has watched through this Thai Release and confirms that it is the version he saw at his local cimema in Thailand AKA The Asian Uncut Full Colour release, with selectable English Subtitles.

His original post on the Forum was this...

Just wanted to quash all the Panic and Incorrect rumours surrounding the Thai Version of KILL BILL and exactly what CDWOW official stance is. I have just come off the telephone to Stuart Wood, who descibes himself as CDWOWS DVD GURU, in other words CDWOWS DVD main man. And he confirms that CDWOW are aware of an R3 Thai UNCUT Version, the same as the Japanese R2 version, but they do not stock it. As most of their suppliers are based in Hong Kong and not Thailand, where this DVD has been released by a very well respected distributor. So there's no need to pay for the over priced Japan R2 Release - unless you haven't a multi-region dvd player that is. Go for the Thai R3 Release! I supply this version myself, so the last thing i want is to end up with a load of R3 Cut Versions that I cannot sell. I have carried out extensive research on the Thai Release. It is currently IN STOCK in Thailand and will be shipping on Fri 16th April. I have also requested my supplier to pop it in to have a look and check that it is what is described in the spec sheet. I will report back with what he finds, but as you can appreciate he is very bogged down! And as far as he is concerned it IS THE UNCUT VERSION, with FUll Colour and English Subs. And i am confident as a bulk buyer that the Thai Release of KILL BILL is UNCUT and Identical to the Jap R2 Release, just much cheaper!!

It's a bit odd saying 'FULL colour' and 'No b/w scenes' when there is only 1 b/w scene that was filmed for colour. The scenes filmed for b/w are surely not going to be colourised

iirc its only the HOBL that is now in colour the opening is still b+w even though the HOBL was shot for b+w as u can see some of them spraying clear water in the colour trailers! wonder if the colourise the water?

Seems to be a hell of a lot of water flying off that guy though.

Wouldn't a possible reason be that they had to optically de-colourize the blood to get the scene passed for the trailer?
