50 inch rear projection HD DLP tv
About £2850 in France
A good alternative to a plasma?
Wow, good price! Picture should be better than plasma, by quite a margin I would think, higher resolution and better blacks/contrast. Not clear which chip it uses but HD2 or HD2+ would be likely and either will provide stellar performance.
Might be worth popping over to AVSForums to see what they think of the technology as DLP telly's are as rare as hen's teeth in the UK/Europe.

By the way,it uses a HD2 chip and is European version of the Optoma DLP in the States.
Very helpful french lady at Sagem,UK plans to install PC based HD demo in these Comet stores next week.
From memory, I'm sure I read a review of the Optoma that was very good indeed!
I'd like a look at this so I'll visit Comet in a couple of weeks and try to get out with my wallet intact. Be interesting to compare the UK price with that of the French and US.
Paul
Just been looking at the specs - the long-gone NathanSilly would sell his soul for on of these  Looks like UK is catching up on the US bigtime!

Does anyone know how much this TV is being sold in the UK at the Comet stores?

It was on the Comet website last week but has now been removed.
I think it was £2800.

Strange that it has been removed from the Web although they have very few in stock. 4 in store demos plus 4 in Warehouse as of Monday.
Mine was delivered today and it is fantastic. The best TV picture that I have ever experienced in the UK.
Now going to have to have Euro 1080 set box, available in theory next month.

Can you confirm the price at comet?
It seems a bargain when 1280*720 DLP front projectors are much more.
Is the DVI usable with PAL 50Hz DVD's? The PDF doesn't show any resolution working @50HZ.

£2799 plus delivery.Using Samsung 935 into DVI and Pal discs, picture is superb.
Price equates to $ and Euro price very closely so for a change the Brits are not being ripped off.

Great news about the price - strange how one manufacturer can price realistically for the UK but others find it impossible to do anything other than price hike!
This set really does bring us fully up to speed with the US, well done Optoma! Now, if only we had a decent HDTV service....!
Paul
It looks very good..... im right on the verge of a panasonic plasma but this too looks interesting.....

tell me, do you get rainbows with a dlp rptv?

I have not seen any rainbows on the Sagem so far but this problem does vary from to person. For me, no screen burn v. plasma is a huge advantage
Go for it Buns!
How many Plasma's have resolutions of 1280x720? Plasma black is pretty grim in comparison as well I would think!
Come on, you know it makes sense! Ok, a Plasma flat up against the wall does look cool but my patience would wear thin pretty quickly knowing that the Sagem is better.
(Check for the rainbows first though - do you get 'em on DLP RPTV's?)
Paul
Resolution isnt everything! The panasonic plasma I have intended to buy has 4000:1 CR and is widely acknowledged as great with blacks!
I dont know that the sagem is better you see so it wouldnt bother me so much! I doubt I would be able to see one either and I think it would cost more than the plasma. Add to that that I know that rainbows hassle me on dlp FP's......
really the only thing going for the sagem in my mind is the size...... If the plasma were a 50 inch i wouldnt think twice!

I thought all RP sets were prone to screen burn, no matter which technology was used...
Are DLP RP sets different in that regard then?

No screen burn on DLP or LCD Rear Proj.Only on CRT.
Toss a coin Buns, I can see this going down to the wire :)

Unfortunately its all well and good tossing a coin to make the choice, but I think the plasma is the only one I can actually get. NI isnt highly likely to have one of these sets anywhere and I cant find anyone online either.....

looks just like the tv that will replace my Sony RPTV

NOT HOME UNTIL FRIDAY.DIMENSIONS ARE ON SAGEM WEBSITE.FROM MEMORY IT IS ABOUT 5 INCHES LOWER THAN SONY 50" LCD RPTV WHICH WAS ITS PREDECESSOR .
THE OPTIONAL STAND IN MY OPINION POSITIONS IT TOO HIGH.(APOLS FOR UPPER CASE.ITS EASIER ON MY XDA 2!)

I most certianly wouldnt buy b4 a demo, all im saying is, its a nice peice of AV gear that wouldnt look out of place in my front room.
Im also looking at the new Phillips LCOS displays as well as these come in a 55" model.
Im also sure many peps on these boards have bought AV gear with out a demo and just gone on other users recomendations...im sure most would trust others judgements here.
Just look at all the SVS sub users on this board...im sure only a tiny % heard one before purchace...thats what this place is for, a pool of collective knowledge :)

HD is finnaly arriving!
Can those of you who are buying this set let us all know what it looks like with:
1) An analogue signal input
2) A DTT input
3) A DVD input
And if any of you sees these HD HR Xvid things that turn up on the internet from time to time, let me know what they look like on it playing from a computer:

I saw this set in Comet today running in HD and was totally blown away by the picture quality, it is by far the best picture quality i have ever seen. It would be interesting to see how good it would be with a normal pixelated digital signal from Sky or Freeview.
The plasma's setup next to it looked Bl**dy dreadful...and one was a Panasonic

If it's the SAGEM AXIUM HTD501DLP then I have seen it in Comet too, but with a poor RF feed. Talk about not doing it justice!!!
However, just pressing the menu button revealed the true story, the menu items looked like they were glued to the front of the screen, they were that bright and clear!

Saw the HD demo in Comet on Friday and was blown away. Went back on Saturday just to make sure I wasn't dreaming and they'd switched off the HD demo and hooked it up to the usual crappy source so it looked as bad as all the other screens in the shop.
It got me wondering on the effect having just one decent TV setup correctly with a full blown HD demo going would impact on the sales of the other sets in the shop.
Well which would you buy, a 50" DLP showing HD for £2K or a badly setup 50" plasma demoing an RF feed for £6K.
No contest!

Hi fellow members
I am looking for a 'future proof' large screen TV and am gravitating towards the Sagem Axium. I then saw a similar sized Sony (KF50SX300) in a trade/retail warehouse (Costco). It is slightly dearer than the Sagem but cosmetically looks better and to my (unpractised eye) the picture didn't look too bad. Is it HDTV compatible? It has the same no o and configuration of scarts as the sagem. I cannot find an independant review of the damn thing on the net! Any one out there know anything about the Sony?
Regards

Saw it at Stuff - they quoted £1999 inc - pic on HD PC was stunning - still not as good as the Fuji 55" Plasma or 61" Pio with similar source..
Anybody compared Fuji 55 with Hitach 55 on HD - Hitach already with DVi - but is it as good? - Fuji will have comms box, DVi in Jan.

how about the 65 inch ThemeScene - c £3.5k - their front projector is pretty nifty with HD at similar price - makes SIM2 look a bit out on a limb?

I also had a look at this set in comet - very impressive for £1999.
Although I did think, there was some dark shading at lower corners.
Concerned that a normal analogue/digital feed was not available so will await further demo. Can someone explain why the Optoma (do not like the dark grey but if it's that much better…… ) is superior - and why the new Toshiba will be that much better again. Any details on the Toshiba, price etc…

Guys, who said the the Toshiba 46" DLP is better than the 50" Optoma/Themescene RD50???
Let's talk about that, shall we...?
And as far as Optoma RD50 benefits over the Sagem 50inch equivalent is concerned: I think many other longer-standing and respected members of this board have already touch upon this, but summarily....
HD2+ chip rather than HD2.....
3000:1 (yes, it's true - I saw it at their offices) vs 2000:1 (max) for the Sagem
Better fine-tuning with the Gamma and Color curves of the TV compared to other manufacturers, resulting in deeper blacks and better black levels...
Need I go on?

No, not a good buy, in my opinion. The new generation of DLP TVs are due very soon, and not very much more than the price you've been quoted will buy you the new Optoma, for example.

Moved to DLP rear projection TV forum.
:smoke:
Just back from a cross channel hypermarket trip and I was interested to see that both Carrefour and Darty had the Sagem for sale at 2490 euros which included a 2 year warranty as standard. Current credit card rate is about 1.4 euros/£ so that's over £200 cheaper than in the UK - what's new! Interesting to see also that they both offer a 5 year warranty for an extra 229 euros.

What is the vertical viewing angle like on these DLPs [the Sagem and Optoma]? I was concerned to see a review on the Sagem say it was not very good. I was planning on putting one on top of a 1M tall AV rack, which puts the top of the TV at almost 2M. Am I likely to get a poor view at a normal sitting height?
AV Junky
17-11-2004, 5:49 PM
Sounds like you're about right to me. Ideal is your eyes level with the middle of the screen, in your sitting position.
mattross
17-11-2004, 7:20 PM
1.5M is a bit high for a sitting position though don't U think? That's about the height of the centre of the screen if I go ahead.
I e-mailed Optoma UK and their response said it shouldn't be a problem with the RD50/65. Not scientific proof but from their own demo room apparently it looks the same at most angles. I haven't found any reviews of the Optoma TVs yet so I'm relying on Sagem reviews.

I am considering buying the Sagem 50 inch TV but am concerned that while brilliant for Hi Def one review I read mentioned a lot of "noise" on ordinary TV.
All demos (including the Comet branch I visited) are wired for Hi-def it seems.
Any experience on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm new at this - maybe in twice!
I am interested in buying the Sagem 50" DLP TV but a review I read complained about noise on ordinary TV material. the Comet demo I've seen was only set up for Hi-Def Tv which of course was very good.
Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of using this tv for watching ordinary TV - how does it stack up ?
Thanks

I have contaced Sagem in France today about the lack of HDCP on the DVI-input.
I've asked if it's possible to turn this thing on by firmware flash or any other method, i haven't got any answer yet but i will post the answer here as soon as i get a reply from them in France.
Otherwise the Sagem is incredible.

26-11-2004, 8:47 AM
Lizzard, the answer is no update possible by firmware
Could only be a hardware upgrade (which is done in the US for the first Optoma 50s that didn't have HDCP either).
The new Sagem 45 does have HDCP though
Most of my discs are NTSC and I dont have any complaints at all. I got my 3910 playing via component into the SAGEM and it simply looks amazing. I don't have any regrets at all about buying the SAGEM
