I've just made an order with dvd pacific and have been told that they cant mark it as $20 anymore:( . They have been told by HM customs to declare the true value of packages:( :( :( .

Was there a message on their site stating this or did you get an e-mail from them ?
Wonder who else we can use ?:( Although, using Buffy Season 6 as an example - it's such a good price that the VAT on top still makes it way more affordable than the R2.

Well according to my mp "shortly" small consignments under £200 will be free of customs duty. Have asked him to clarify about the vat.

I thought DVDPacific might be next - am using them a lot at the moment.
Received a single disc recently (paid $22) marked as "software", value $20. It was shipped on 28/1 and went through customs clearance on 2/2.
However, I have 3 earlier, outstanding orders that I foolishly neglected to ensure were shipped separately. :suicide:
Total value $70, and these were shipped a week earlier and still havent arrived. I've now resigned myself to it being held up in Mount Pleasant, with some bod opening up the package, nodding approvingly at the DVDs, then smirking quietly as he thinks of me in a week or so, sadly shaking my head at this wee card the postie has put through the letterbox.
C'est la vie.

Who's your MP???
This lot in power are squeezing the pips out of ALL of us - I'm amazed they would relax the rules on this one.

You would think HMC&E had better things to do than persecute DVD buyers. What about all the drugs being smuggled in, and bloody illegal immigrants in backs of lorries? I'm not racist, by the way, but this country really takes the p*** out of us!

hmmm I think you need to think a bit about this. The staff at mount pleasant are employed by Royal Mail, if you get hit by a courier, it's their staff who will bill you. These people act as agents for HMCE, and have been doing this for years Importing DVDs is something of a Johnny Come Lately compared to what they were used to slapping duty on in the past & presents different problems as the packages can be small and fairly anonomous. All that we are seeing is a tightening up of systems to enforce a law that's years old & applies to all EU members

"I'm not racist by the way" - ah yes the familar fig leaf for those who then go on a quasi racist rant - ie - duty on my dvds - its ALL the fault of those pesky foreigners...
As for having the pips squeezed... please get a life - taxation in the UK is extremely low!
And as for comments like "Soon there will be nowhere to order R1 boxsets from" - what absolute rubbish - there are plenty of places to order from - all it means is that you are slightly more likely to get done for duty - its a risk that comes with the territory.
Please remember - you arent being "picked on" or taxed by stealth if you get caught - its the law and its been that way for many, many years. There is no divine right to escape duty and VAT - if you do so - the very best of luck to you - if you get caught - try and be grown up about it and not whine like spoiled brats.

Yep!
It's so low that you're better off on the benefit system than holding down a respectable job!
Why do you think all the asylum seekers want to come here?
It's because we have the finest benefit system in the World! :clown:

again - another ignorant rant.
Taxes are low - I'm a tax professional and have worked in Europe and have experience of these things.
As for "all the asulum seekers" wanting to come here - well of course that is just prejudiced crap.
We need immigrants - we have a skilled labour shortage, and this country could not survive without imported labour. Compare our pathetic "popular" view of immigrants to that of the USA.
I think you should stop believing what you read in the hate mongering tabloids.

agreed - and so it should be, all I was pointing out, is that you should expect to have to pay duty and VAT if you import discs above £18.
Stamping of feet and whinging when you legitimately get caught is extremely childish, and baseless claims that we are overtaxed etc merely demonstrates ignorance and a lack of maturity.

I live next to an asylum seeker house that used to be a retirement home!
The local shops have all shut down due to theft and threats, made to the owners, by these immigrants.
The local house owners have started to sell up and move away due to these immigrants damaging their property and cars and threatening them!
"We need immigrants - we have a skilled labour shortage"
That should be: "We need immigrants - we have a hooligan shortage"
Open your eyes and see what is really going on!

Dear oh dear - what a different planet you must be on.
I can assure you I am paying considerably more in tax since 1997, with only below inflation salary rises some years since , and none on others. I am definitely worse off, my pension's gone down the toilet, my council tax has gone through the roof, I pay extra tax to get on a plane, buy essential insurance for the car and about the only thing it feels I'm not paying tax on is air.
So don't tell me to get a life.
Getting back to the subject of the thread, the benefits of R1 are gradually being eroded away in any case, wouldn't you agree? Prices are creeping up, quite a few no longer offer free P & P, R2 availability is so much better than it used to be and for most people the speedup of PAL doen't seem to be a huge issue.
In any case, most purchases are going to remain under £18 from the States, as long as care is taken to order individually!! Its just those blasted boxed sets. Have to be more selective I suppose.

Whenever I import stuff from the states, not just dvds, but a lot of car stuff too, I EXPECT to be hit by Customs. If I don't, great, I can put the money i've saved towards my council tax bill, which has doubled in the last four years, which isn't a baseless claim, or to help pay for the very expensive fuel I put in my car, which, again, isn't a baseless claim.

Did I say I DIDN'T expect to get hit by customs?
I just think we've been fortunate, for the most part, to have avoided customs charges generally. In the 4 years I've been purchasing overseas, I reckon I've paid charges maybe 3 times. With the loopholes being closed, if I really want an over £18 disc or boxed set, then I now EXPECT to pay.
That doesn't mean I have to like it though.

Sorry to drag folk back on topic but has anyone actually received anything from DVDPacific with full paid value on it yet? Ive got a couple in the last few days which were marked as normal.

I think if we do receive goods still marked at $20 then we shouldn't publicise it on these forums. You dont know who is reading the forums.
