TLC (Varilight) Dimmer Inductive??

Does anyone know if these dimmer switches are compatible with an inductive transformer?

If by inductive transformer you mean the heavy magnetic low voltage transformers (as opposed to the new lightweight ELV transformers) then the answer is yes as I have one of these switches contolling 2 x sets of 3 ceiling spots which are about 3-4 years old and use the older heavy type transformers.

Due to be changed for mains halogen in the next few days to use with my new Lutron Telume dimmers.

Will be selling my 3 TLC dimmers (2 x IR and 1 x slave, all in brass) once upgrade complete :)

By inductive transformers I mean those toriodal type transfers. Is this what you use? Can Toriodal transformers be used with the Varilights TLC dimmers?

Toriodal transformers are those circular flat ones.

Messiah you stated That your lighting is to be changed for mains halogen in the next few days.

Why are you changing to mains voltage halogen? I am about to install my lights in my mini cini room and this is the route that I am taking, it would be re-assuring to know your opinion

Direct quote from the TLC dimmer instructions:-

Can be used for GU10 or similar HiSpot mains halogen bulbs (dimmer raiting must be double the max load of the lights)
Not suitable for non-toroidal wire-wound transformers.

Quite simply becuase I have ordered some Lutron Telume scene lighting units and I had to make a choice between units that would control mains halogen, magnetic low voltage or electronic low voltage. I had the ELV type in the ceiling but felt as the dimming units are costing over £100 each I would probably be more future proofed going for the type that can control mains halogen as I think longer term transformers will become redundant.

Must say though, that now I have changed the ceiling lights from 12V 30W lights to mains halogen 50W I prefer the low voltage type. The mains halogen give a less diffused light and are no brighter (strangely).

I will see if the new Telume units may still work the ELV transformers and if so will put those back in.

I was just a little worried that at one point I was the only one going down this route. We have them in the kitchen,cloakroom and utility room, they have been in for two years with no probs but operate on a normal rocker switch
