View Full Version : Wireless Broadband and Ethernet Help!!!!
I want to get a complete wireless system for my broadband and Xbox "Live".
This is what I was thinking of getting for the Ethernet bridge connector. (http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ShopGroupID=29&CategoryID=88&ProductID=634) . If I understand correctley will this connect from Xbox direct to PC or will it need to go through a router??
Next thing, would it be worth me buying a wireless router so I can plug my existing broadband modem into it or would it be worth me buying a wireless broadband modem.
Here is one wireless router I have found. (http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopSearch.asp?CategoryID=87&ShopGroupID=29&Alt=Yes)
Is this the right route I should take????
Cheers
Mark :god:

I use that netgear with my XBOX LIVE and it runs great. I have a netgear MR814v2 router connected to the pc in the upstairs office, and the 101 connected to the xbox downstairs, and have no problems at all (apart from lag on Top Spin, but I don't think thats just me). Hope this helps
Thanks for the reply, I am now going to go for This one (http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/QSearch.asp?QSearch=dg834g) which is a 5 in one router. As my Xbox is staying in the lounge I will not need a wireless ethernet bridge.
Just talking to a friend and he has told me as I have a Centrino chip in my Laptop I will not need to get the Laptop card. So all in all it will be costing me £125 for a complete wireless system.:smashin:
BTW it sounds like you have Links 2004 kwijibo, if you fancy a game give us a shout. My user tag is Mr Maximus.:)

Nice choice. Just check that you can return it if necessary. Only reason I say this is I have a Netgear ADSL modem (not the full all in one) and it has problems with certain other XBL users (seems to be those using Belkin routers). You cannot talk to or hear them. I ended up buying a Zoom modem to get round this but would love to get the same Netgear All In One you linked to.
I'd be delightred to know if it works for you and particularly if you can talk to and hear UncagedTyphoon and DelAV.
Will do Messiah, I ordered it about an hour ago and hope to receive it by Wednesday will ley you know.
You will have to excuse my ignorance but could you explain what you mean by talk to and hear UncagedTyphoon and DelAV. I pressume you dont mean "Live" chat??:god:

Yes I do mean Live Chat. With my Netgear modem (DM602) I am unable to hear or talk to certain people within XBL when playing games. I also have problems connecting to their server if they are hosting a game. It only happens with a small number of people but as soon as I switched to a Zoom modem the problem disappeared.
Look forward to hearing how you get on with it. Looks a great bit of kit.
Keeping my fingers crossed tightly that it will work. Will let you know!!

Tonight I cannot even join any PGR2 games. Just keep getting messgae 'This game session is no longer available. Press A to continue'.
Doubt it's to do with the router or modem but damned annoying all the same. Anyone else having similar problems?
I think Live are still having teething troubles. Hope they get it sorted out soon because it is bloody annoying.
Little things that happen like if you are playing Links 2004 for example, at the end of the game it comes up with a message that there is a problem with recording your stats. Only last week every single person lost all of their money which they had built up over the months.

MarkR,
Sorry, I don't have links (sounds like I should be getting it though....). I am unhealthily addicted to PGR2, so add me to your favourites and if you're playing PGR2 or I get Links, we'll have a race or a round

Think my other half is thinking she has made the biggest mistake of her life by letting me go "Live".

Typhoon was in and out of our PGR2 games all night, even when 3 different people hosted. dunno what's up with that.
(EDIT) I use a Linksys wireless router (befw11s4) and a Zoom 3 ethernet adsl modem and don't have problems I know of.
This site http://cgi.support.plus.com/exchanges/ is good for checking the adsl exchange and to see it your is having problems.

I use a Linksys WRT54G router and Zoom X4 ADSL modem so can't work out if it's my kit or not. Already on my second modem (because of these Live issues) and don't really wanna buy another without knowing what's causing it. Just so damned annoying.
Last week I could hear everyone and had no access problems. Tis week it's dire. :(

Hi Messiah, linked up the new router/modem and all in all seems to be running perfectly. I have been onto Live (Links 2004) and the talking seems to be OK.

Thanks Mark. If you don't mind maybe you can let me know in a week or so if you find anyone you cannot hear/talk to. If all OK I may very well get one myself. Thanks.

Sod it. I've just ordered one. The Zoom modem can go back to PCW and get the £80 back so only £60 really. We'll see.
Plus it is a lovely looking piece of kit!! Dont think you will be dissapointed. Let me know what your comments are!!:smashin:
BTW it seems to be even faster than my cable modem, the Mrs is well impressed, think that deserves another one of these:smashin:

Gotta look better than my 2 box solution. Thanks. Hopefully will arrive tomorrow. Will let you know if it solves my problems.
"Zero Knowledge Freedom" is a program that comes with the kit, what a fantastic program. It basically controls everything that runs through your computer giving you complete control of what you want to allow to run on your system, in a way I suppose it acts like a kind of gateway before you let the files through. It also includes a whole list of advert server addresses which of course will be blocked when attempting to access into your system, very handy. That is just the tip of the iceberg of what this program can do. I am seriously impressed with the whole package. Best £132 I have spent IMO, Let me know what you think Messiah.

Hi Mark
Can you remember which courier they used? Just trying to work out when it may arrive so I can make sure someone is here. Thanks.
Hi Messiah,
You should have received an e-mail that your order has been despatched, within the that e-mail there should be a tracking link. The courier sevice was initial City Link.
I am surpised that they have not e-mailed you.

Nope nothing. Maybe I should give them a call.
[edit] Having spoken with them they tell me the order has not progressed because the credit card security digits do not match. Poppycock. They also say they sent an e-mail which I have never received.
Needless to say I have cancelled the order with them as they have not instilled confidence in me. I shall now look elsewhere for it.

Thanks. Thing is it was fine for the first week or so. I am beginning to wonder whether it may be the Linksys WRT54G and hence my considering an all in one solution.
I've given up for the moment as have too many other things on my plate and BBBuyer let me down so will wait a bit.

Might be worth trying a couple of games without the wireless router connected.
Then if the problem is cured DMZ the modem to the IP addy of the router, just in case the nat on the modem and the nat on the router are conflicting.
I'm no expert mind, so it's just a theory mate.
It would be a shame to fork out more cash if this can be cured via the routers configuration.

Got the new DG834 today and set up this evening. First impressions
"Wow, it's big" (router that is :) )
so a quick bit of rearranging and everything is now way neater than before :)
Also think my browsing is much quicker than before. Had quite a few delays when broswing with my Linksys router and Zoom modem but seems ok so far. Tried to join Delav and Easy Shooter's RS3 game tonight to test it out but Server Full
Maybe tomorrow.

Problem I had this morning is I could not access the Net or mail until I rebooted the Netgear unit. My PC was put into standby last night but power remains on the Netgear unit 24/7. Despite being able to ping the Netgear this morning it just would not deliver any web pages or mail (though connection light was lit on front of it) until the power was cycled.
Pain  I hope it's not gonna be like this every morning as the old Linksys / Zoom combo never did that.
Freedom seems OK. Prefer Kerio though so far but need more time to tweak and fiddle with it.

Also tried getting the free upgrade (to Freedom 4.2) but still no upgrade link via mail. Any chance you've had the link?

that sounds like a DNS issue mate. Power cycling normally does resolve that issue. Happens to the best of us :rotfl:
