View Full Version : Ceiling Mounted Projector Connections

Hi all
I've posted this in the Projector section, but seeing as most of you have ceiling mounted screen you may be able to help me.
I am about to mount my Sony VW-11HT to the ceiling, however, as it's not a dedicated room (living room), I will be taking it down when not in use.
I was wondering how you guys wire up your projectors, do you have a socket outlet mounted in the ceiling for power and a socket like those sold by 'letsautomate' Here (http://www.letsautomate.com/10747.cfm?) for video connections?
I really don't want wires hanging through the ceiling and would like the neatest possible solution.
Would appreciated your thoughts and what solutions you guys came up with.

Iw ould leave it up all the time mate!!! dont use sockets. You can just run a VGA lead back to an Iscan in equipment rack and have a recessed hole for the vga lead to tuck into but why take the PJ down?

I've a Sony VW12 and I can't imagine the hassle of having to take it down between viewings! You'll have to unplug all the cables and unscrew the thing from the mount, and the pj is fairly heavy so you'll probably need someone to give you a hand each time you take it down and put it back up. You'll also have to realign the pj everytime!

Unfortunately I cannot leave the projector up full time, one reason being that there are smokers in the room and don't really want it full of nicotine!!

The mount I have is a Chief RPA which allows for quick release and mounting without having to realign it each time.
Surely there must be other people on here that don't have their projectors mounted full time!!
I don't mind having to take it down, my only problem is what to do with the cables when it is down.
I don't want a hole in the ceiling to push the cables into, this would look even more unsightly than the mounting bracket!!

i mean have a cover, something like a double gang back box with a flush cover to hide the cables.

What about setting the projector on a coffee table and hide everything when not in use. That way you won't have problem with the cables, but you do have to realign it everytime.

Not to helpful but thanks.
You could always have some sort of fake light fitting (uplighter style) which could hide the cables when not in use.
But I echo the others here and say leave it up all the time!

I think people who ceiling mounted their projectors do leave them up all the time. It's the beauty of being able to switch it on and watch the movie without having to set it up everytime. There's the risk of dropping the projector(big one) by taking the projector down frequently.

Tell whoever is smoking to stop. They will then live longer and not end up dying in agony from cancer.
You can then all spend much longer watching your lovely projector

Lots of advice on whether I leave the projector up full time or not.
Let me put the question another way, does everyone who has a ceiling mounted projector, mounted perminantly or not, just cut a hole in their ceiling to let the cables dangle though or do some of you put in socket outlets and connect your projectors via short cable runs from outlets to projector?
If you do just cut a hole for the cables, what do you use in order to leave a neat finish around them?

I've just cut a hole, and the mount covers it :

I used one of those funky circular bladed drill bits to cut the hole, so it's very neat.

It's a drill bit with a saw blade mounted around it...if you imaging bending a saw blade in a circle.......I got it at B&Q. About 7 quid if I recall....

Not that new - it's about 25 years old :)

Doooooh yes of course.
25 years old is new. My house is 1930's and latt walls, ceiling and some brick partition walls. Very sturdy but not AV friendly :)
