View Full Version : Aliens, boring?
Watched Aliens from the Quad box set the othe night and frankly found it quite boring and annoying. Good enogh action pic, but way way overrated, not much tension, some very annoying characters like Hudson (Bill Paxton) wailing like a baby all the time (how the hell does someone of his character get into a crack marine unit) and that She -Male Vasquez.
For me this film has dated badly, some of the effects of the ship entering the planet are a bit ropey, the predictable pace of film holds no tension whatsoever and the new directors cut actually had me a little bored, unneccsarily long for a action flick. Will watch the original version again, but for the dc i'd give it 5.5 out of 10.
NB I reckon Alien aand Alien 3 (underrated) have come out better in thier directors/extended cut.
There is always one.

I've just said the same thing about Aliens on another thread.
I would go as far as to say it's crap.
Usual Cameron garbage.
Oh dear.
Aliens= One of the best films ever made.
Cameron= One of the best action directors ever, if not the best amazing pacing and structure.

Everyones entitled to their opinion, i think the first 3 Alien pics are great (( Love Alien 3 )) i thought Alien Resurrection terrible, don't abuse a person cos of their opinion.
Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Please don't abuse people just because you disagree with them.
Aliens is one of my favourite ever films. I must have watched it loads of times.
But also Alien 3 is one of the films I hate most. Ok film on its own, but completely destroyed the legacy of the previous film and totally ruined the good franchise. Look at where we are now with the Alien films. Alien Resurrection had nothing to work with, which is why it wasn't as successful and not many people liked it. Although I preferred it to Alien 3. Its no surprise James Cameron wants to get involved again, and if I was reading the report right, wants to do a story after Aliens. Although I could be wrong on that last bit.

Aliens has always been in my top 5 films but I'd never have the audacity to ridicule them just because they disagree.

I like Alien. I like Aliens. Both for different reasons. I even kinda liked Alien 3 in it's extended form (although i don't like sigourney's harcut!). You want a film that sucks - try Alien Ressurection!

Watched the extended version last night and really enjoyed it to be honest. However the one thing that really was crap was the soundtrack sync with the picture - it was miles out in places.
Anyone else notice this? Is it better on the original theatre release?

For the first time watch Alien was the best as it was all new and you didn’t know what to expect probably the best of its type of film ever.
Aliens was more of an action film than relying on subtleties of horror and I liked the extended cut and did not find it boring.
Alien 3 was some what muddled especially all them running round the corridors at the end.:thumbsdow
Alien Resurrection I enjoyed although many do not, it reminded my very much of Deep Rising which was out the same time OK not one of the best movies ever but hell of a lot better than others like Event Horizon etc.

Its a common English expression, meaning that in a group of people there is always one that disagrees or has a totally different point of view. :lesson:
Someone else called them a sad pair of gits and you had a bigger problem with "there is always one".

They raise a critique of a film universally liked by most AV enthusisasts which is frankly, IMO, quite a brave thing to do.
Instead of entering into a discussion with them over it you seek to instantly ridicule.
The internets an easy place to hide isn't it. No comeback from your statements. I'm sure if a stranger in a pub had made that statement you'd have been a bit more cohesive in your answer?
FWIW, Aliens (again one of my top 5 films) is basically a glorified chase movie albeit one done with style, substance and a very decent attempt at characterisation and tension. There are also a few decent curveballs along the way. I can fully understand why someone mightn't like it though.

This is where "Damage Inc" should be warned by the moderators to watch his posting or be banned from further use.
As somone has already pointed out, it's very easy for cowards to hide behind the internet. The answer is to remove these people before they continue to ruin the forum.
I'm surprised Greg didn't actually do anything about this poster.

The first time I watched Aliens I thought it was pants. Then I watched it again and liked it. Then I watched it again and loved it. Since then its become my most watched film but over the years I just can't watch it anymore. It just bores the hell out of me.
But I would say its still my second favourite film. When you consider the amount of hardware and technical detail for starters and a very cleverly woven storyline you just have to give it the respect it deserves.
The Marines werent the Elite but a bunch of missfits nobody would miss. Burke talks them up to Ripley to convince her to go but she only realises shes been stitched up once shes there.

If this was the case then I don't think Burke would have went with them at all!
Would you have gone to encounter an alien species, that deadly, with a "bunch of misfits"?
I personally would have gone with the best!

Yeah but Burke told Ripley she wouldn't be going in with the troops, that was one of the conditions he gave her before they left. Both of them were to stay safe in the APC while the others went in. Look how Gorman went to peices when his team were attacked, he was a total novice on only his second mission. They were expendable, all of them.
Can we draw a line under the arguing and keep this thread on topic please... :)
If nothing else Aliens is a classic because of the way it has influenced Hollywood movies ever since its release.

Bump... seriously, didn't anyone else notice the poorly sync'd sound on the extended cut?

nothing wrong with the sound sync. on my R1 version of the Quadrilogy on the extended version....

phil - yes the sound sync isn't quite spot on on the r2 version of one of the films (can't remember which one!), fortunately my dvd player lets me adjust this (and remembers it per disc).

Thanks guys. Can't find anything on google about this - maybe its my Pioneer 656. Good excuse to treat myself to a PAL prog player in the new year (is it the Denon 2900 that has this feature Cybersoga?)

I notice you have a plasma; I take it you have the facility to delay the soundtrack? - regardless of whether your player outputs a PS signal, you are watching a progressive picture displayed. If you don't match this with an equivalent soundtrack delay, you will have syncronisation issues.
Far more useful if the amp (rather than the dvd player) has the delay feature as it can be adjusted for all sources.
I have the R1 as well and thought the soundtrack was spot-on.
The commentary is well worth a listen btw.

I believe on some players it is the seamless branching that the films use that can cause problems with the soundtrack, I was checking the chapters on Alien Resurrection and one of the chapters was way out of sync by like 2 seconds, just skipped back to the start of the chapter and it was fine, on my mates dvd player the last chapter on Aliens wont play at all, it freezes and he has to take the disc out, on his PC it is fine.
As for the Directors Cut of Aliens, it isnt really new, it is many years old and was the only release available on dvd until this set came out so I enjoy it alot more than the original cinema release.

Nike, I.J. - thanks again. I don't have PAL prog nor the ability to delay the sound in my player or amp. I also know there is an intrinsic delay when using a display device like a plasma. However, the lip-sync on Aliens R2 was much more noticeable than on other discs in my collection.
I'll have a go at skipping back to the start of a chapter to see if that helps next time...
before i watched my alien quad i loved ALIENS now for some reason i love ALIEN 3 weird

Phil,
I noticed the lip sync was out for a few seconds. This was amongst the monotonous "Hey maaaan", "Maaaan", crap acting and at times, terrible directing.
Thank heavens for Sigourney Weaver.
