Unrated R1 DVD's

Just a quick question:

Are R1 "unrated" versions of DVDs (American Pie, Charlies Angels Full Throttle etc) "uncut" versions of the films that have footage in them over the cinema/normal DVD release?

Theyre just footage that is extra to the dvd release and has not been rated in America unlike over here they don't have to get the film rated, films like True Romance are great in the unrated version.

The 'unrated' tag on R1 DVDs can often also be more a marketing trick than providing any positive/lengthy additional footage. The 'unrated' edition of Pitch Black being a good example - about 5 seconds of extra footage that many feel detracts from the development of one of the main characters.

It's also used very cynically on films like Charlie's Angels Full Throttle to give the impression there may be more flesh on show than in the rated version.

Generalisation: Studios don't often release films to cinemas without an MPAA rating because they believe it would prejudice their audience figures. And to get a given MPAA rating, thet may have to apply some cuts. They do, however, sometimes release the same film, with some extra material, as 'unrated' on DVD.

Charlies Angel was unrated because the additional scenes which are violent not sexual would have required an R rating at american cinemas, they wanted PG-13 it's that simple.

Exactly, but I'm sure they're more than happy for DVD purchasers to think the 'unrated' version might be a little raunchier...

But having said this some R2 UK DVD's may have the "unrated" footage in the movie but not list it as unrated as it was never removed for UK cinema's...
