I just saw this on the IMDB Movie/TV News page and thought it would be of interest here:

Intel is expected to disclose next month that it has developed a new type of semiconductor that could make it possible for relatively thin, 50-inch, high-definition TV sets costing less than $1,000 to be available to consumers by the holiday season next year, the New York Times reported today (Wednesday), citing executives close to the company. The new technology, which Intel President and COO Paul Otellini is expected to unveil at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, opening Jan. 8, employs a system of tiny electronic shutters that can reflect light onto a low-cost flat panel to produce a high-definition picture that equals or exceeds the quality of current plasma and LCD displays, the Times reported.

This sounds interesting - lets see what it looks like at CES!

This will be based on LCoS technology - Liquid Crystal On Silicon.

It is one of a number of competing technologies, including
Texas Instruments DLP (Digital Light Projection) which uses microscopic mirrors.

By contrast, the technology used by Intel employs vast arrays of tiny electronic shutters that can alter the amount of reflected light, a method that may allow companies to make big-screen TV sets using rear-projection technology that match or exceed the quality of flat-panel TVs at a much lower cost than plasma and conventional LCD.

Although Intel is not expected to enter the market for digital televisions for a year, Philips Electronics and several American start-up companies have already begun offering LCoS
components and televisions.

I wish I could attend CES ; some of my colleagues are going - but none from UK. Our main ICs that fit the right market are all USA developments :-(

I work for AD in UK and Limerick (I have a complex 50/50% job with 2 roles and bosses at each site).
I have no knowledge of any of our guys involved in the optical MEMs stuff in NI .

Much of my work is done form my home-office here in Manchester.

Chris Muriel - Field Apps Engineer (UK & Ireland) & Central Apps Engineer (Eurolinear Support).

Must just be a co-incidence then Chris. As far as i know optical MEM's are not what the guys in NI do...... im not actually sure what it is they do, but its in the MEM's arena so thought maybe you were related!
