Can anyone please advise how I set up a network printer in Win XP using DHCP. When I install the new printer port it asks for the IP address of the printer but then when I reboot the DHCP server may give the printer a different IP address. Surely this can be done or do I have to use a staic address?

Thanks.

IMX the easiest, if klunky way, is as you suggested and use a static IP on the same subnet as your DHCP server is using, just set the server's IP range to exclude the printer.

The problem is that as you've discovered, Windows will only allow a TCP/IP-based printer to be referred to by its' IP address .. if it allowed a name then you could consider using DNS, though somewhat OTT.

I'm not an expert, though I've used/installed networks for some years, there may be a neat solution but if there is I haven't come across it yet.

reserve an IP address against the MAC address of the printer in the DHCP Console

Most DHCP boxes (routers etc.) will give back the same address if asked for a renew on an old lease.

Many windows (old versions) running ICS don't which can screw you up royally.

If its not windows you probably don't have a problem, if it is, then you'd better reserve the address (if you can)
