what screen width would be best for viewing 16:9 from around 9 feet

I wouldnt go bigger than 6ft wide.
I think the rule of thumb is the size of the screen should be about 2/3 your distance from the screen. Or, conversely, your sitting distance from the screen should be about 1.5 times the width of the screen.
Rather neatly this supports WierdFish's suggestion that you get a 6 foot screen. :-)

I sit 12 feet away and my 6 foot screen is big enough for me. So definitely no bigger than that in your situation.

As stated, usually 1.5 times screen width/viewing distance minimum but depends on the projector.
Some projectors (lower resolution) are best viewed from 1.8 to 2 times screen width away, higher resolution/CRT you might get away with 1.4/1.5.
6' wide is your maximum size IMO.
