Hmm, not sure where to put this as its the HD bit thats of interest but anyway......!

That very interesting Bjoern Roy has posted a review of the DVD versions of LOTR v's the HD version. Read it and weep! Roll on HD tele (that last bits a vain attempt to make sure it fits into this bit of the forum).

Was his source a £20k DVD player into a £20k Scaler though, cos some will believe that can turn water into wine - NOT

Roll on HD tele (another attempt to give this post a home)

I'm scared to watch it! I know its gonna look good and it will make the DVD look bad in comparison

I didnt notice anything wrong with the blacks on my CRT display.
Can you explain what I should be looking for?

Are you sure it wasn't your display device/calibration etc.
I'd be more than happy to verify your findings if you are right.

Video blacks are very flat in comparisson to film. Its one of the biggest differences relative to the original film versions. Its something I'm a little unimpressed with on HD material . I felt they could have helped restore some of the lower intensities when they designed the spec.

Its an observation not a criticism: you can put your helmet away.

Hey MrD, Please excuse the tone of my post. I really didn't mean it in a confrontational way but I see why you thoguht I did, apologies anyway. I was merely trying to understand the point you made.

I cant say I've noticed the blacks to be honest, but I'll pay more attention next time I run the clip.

Helmets away :-)

cheers

forgive my ignorance but what is a hbo showing?

Does that mean that someone has a Hi Def version of LOTR somewhere?
