A Very Stupid Question

Hi,

Usually DVDs we buy from the store are in what format? I mean these DVDs are interlace or progressive? Are there any 480p DVDs or 720p DVDs?

How about HD-DVDs that are going to be available, will they be compatible with the current plasma tv sets?

I understand that you can make a 720p dvd on a computer, can't you?

The reason I'm asking is the Philips E box only accept interlace signal such as 480i and 576i.

Can anyone explain to me please. Sorry for being so ignorant.

I THINK what I'm saying here is right. :)

DVDs are either NTSC or PAL, meaning 480i or 576i as the MPEG decoder outputs them, something else is needed to convert then into progressive, either the DVD player itself, a dedicated convertor such as a de-interlacer, or an HTPC.

HD-DVDs are 1080i I think, if plugged into a lower-resolution display like a plasma or pj the display will down-convert as necessary .. just as happens if you plug a normal PC into it without specially setting up a compatible resolution.
