DV137 with sony w2000. Not happy. How much SH

Has anyone got an idea a dv137 should go for second hand? I have one around 5 months old with little use.

Im so gutted becuase i had it hooked up to a sony 40v2000 which was good but not spectaular on picture like i was hoping and people had mentioned. Considering the player was so dear i thought i know ill upgrade my TV as there is a second lot of scaling going on from dv137 -> 40v200.

I have upgraded to the W2000 which accepts 1080p and i cant tell any difference.

No difference to me in picture quality across :-

sony 40v2000
toshiba sd100e 576p ( scart )
arcam dv137 576p, 720p, 1080i ( hdmi )

sony 40w2000
arcam dv137 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p ( hdmi )

I just havent noticed anything. I now have a worse TV on SD material IMO than the v2000 and the dvd quality hasnt increased.

Gutted, so wondering how much i should think about selling the dv137 and getting something cheaper and clawing some cash back.

Re: DV137 with sony w2000. Not happy. How much SH

Im guessing the main issue here will not be with the arcam dvd player but with the tv. I have heard quite a few rave reviews of the bravia w series and was tempted to buy one myself (cheap, I work for em).

In the end I decided that the quality of the image on SD content was not high enough.

I dont have a 137 so dont know much about it scaling but It would be worth checking to make sure that your not scaling the image on the tv.

Selling your 137 will result in a major loss in sound quality and by the look of things you have a very nice setup.

Maybe someone here knows of a good screen that you could chop your telly in for

Yes, when I checked-out the 2000 series panels I was very unimpressed with the SD quality. Strange how they got so many good reviews.

To prove that it is the panel and not the DVD player can you try a second (non-Arcam perhaps) unit to see what happens? My money is on no change. Can you talk to the supplier of the Sony panel to see if they are prepared to help?

Re: DV137 with sony w2000. Not happy. How much SH

I since have got more impressed with the W SD picture from NTL and the like. I'm more just unimpressed with difference through hdmi of the 137 on any upscaling range. When i set to 1080p the TV says its at 1080p so i have to believe that and that no scaling is happening TV wize.

Guess i can try a different HDMI cable and my old Tosh through scart again.
Perhaps a step down may make me notice difference quality.

Cheers for the help

I have the same set up as you,I understand your frustration with the upscaling from the 137, I to notice very littte difference between them all, but i must say its one hell of a good picture when set to 1080p.For me its given new life to my old dvd's ,maybe you need to fine tune your tv,not to sure why you would want to watch your discs in any other format than 1080p

Sony KDL-40W2000
Arcam Dv137 DVD
Arcam A70 Amplifier
Bose Acoustimass 3 Series IV Speaker System
Sky HD
Xbox 360

Well this is what i dont understand. I watched matrix the scene where they shoot loads of people in an lobby area. Just watched that seen and flicked between the diff scalings on the 137. It did look good, but i couldnt tell a difference. I had also set the TV up using the arcams video setup.

I then watched all the way through children to men again on 1080p but flicking between diff scales and couldnt see much diff.

Guess i need to try some more dvd's. Not sure what to look for really. I just assumed i'd know the difference as the 137 is meant to be supberp for picture compared to say a denon 1906.

Gonna get a mark grant hdmi or a quenex or something and try that, although the one i got was meant to be quite good. Paid £38. Cant remember what make it is though i got it off these forums somewhere.

Can i ask what settings you use on the W2000 for hdmi?

Are you sure you are (or aren't) seeing scaling artefacts? Could be poor setup on the TV. Could be the fact it's an LCD....

Out of interest, what screens are people using/recomend?

Not at all conviced by lcd, they work well for certain applications but Im not too keen on them. Plasma's seem good but for one with a high end spec we are talking serious ££££.

Gonna stick with my crt until the spec and my budget see eye to eye

Using an 40X2000 Sony LCD with my DV139 with amazing results - the X took some tweaking to get it looking right though.
