AVR 350 True HD or Normal?

Hi Guys,

I am running an AVR350 with the sound being input via optical from my PS3. When watching a Blu-ray should I select Dolby True HD or Normal sound set-up. I have a 3 Channel B&W set-up with no sub or rears.

I cant hear any difference between the two, but which in theory should the amp process better?

your amp cant handle high res audio via optical/digital so you will hear no difference. Only way would be to have a std blu ray machine with analogue outs and connect that to analoge ins on the amp.

Re: AVR 350 True HD or Normal?

Thanks,

Although I thought the Arcam cant process HD at all? Or would the standalone be doing the processing in that case?

If I were to get a standalone, would I hear a significant difference? As it all sounds excellent right now and cant imagine how it could be any better without different kit.

yes, you need a stand alone player to do the processing. It will sound better but to get the most out of it you need a sub and rears.

Cool thanks,

Maybe I will go the standalone route in the future, just dont think its worthwhile now. I dont see how it could be better now with what I have.

If you browse through this forum, you'll see responses ranging from "fantastic improvement" to "sounds better using the optical / coax". The only way to find out if you will hear a significant improvement is to borrow a player and try it out for yourself.

In your specific case however, adding surrounds and a sub is likely to yield more.
