Poor pic from DV79

hi

Although ive had the dv79 for a while, and my panny ax100 for a few months, it was only today I realised how bad the pic actually is. I was comparing a dvd with blueray (via borrowed ps3) and although i expected the difference to be noticeable, its as if i am watching a really bad vhs tape now!

The worst part is I am getting halo-effect around edges - most noticeable in light text round dark objects. I didnt think i had this before when i set it up with the projector but could have been blind to it.

Ive got it connected via hdmi.

Any suggestions as to how to correct these artefacts?

The projector is setup fine - using the same hdmi cable and projector settings doesnt produce the same halo effects so not as a result of it being over bright for example.

HELP!

P

Re: Poor pic from DV79

So are you saying you watched Blu-ray on the PS3, and then watched the DV79, and it was terrible?

Did you try normal DVD with the PS3, because that will give you an indication if there is something wrong with your DV79, since the DV79 should be much better than the PS3 for straight DVD.

The other thing is that your pj may be particularly poor at scaling SD. Some of the artefacts you talk of could be caused by poor scaling, whic can cause 'ringing'. However, many find it hard to go back to SD after HD.

I think what I am saying, is that when to comparing blueray to dvd it made me spot these artefacts that I didnt think i should have with a decent Arcam dvd player. I was expecting lower res, and softer (which it was) but didnt expect this ringing effect.

I didnt try the dvd in the ps3 as it was a region 3 disk which it wouldnt play (we were comparing Casino Royale on both formats). The ps3 has gone so cant try your suggestion.

Ive not seen the ringing with other SD sources such as the Wii or Xbox so dont think its the projector. If i get a chance, I'll try another DVD player (albeit not HDMI) to see what the results are like.

Re: Poor pic from DV79

Was the casino royale disc you were using the region 3 version. Because i have that copy also and i have seen the blu ray version on the ps3. I also have the dv79. I have noticed that the recording of casino royale is not half as good qualtiy compared to some other dvds i have. There was a thread about te quality of the r3 version of casino royale, and some people thought the r3 version was poor quality compared to the r2 version. It might just be the dvd. One way to test if it was the player is if u try another film on dvd and compare it to the same film on bluray. As i say it might just be the dvd disc quality.

Re: Poor pic from DV79

yep - it was R3 version of casino royale. Alas the ps3 isnt here any more so cant do any more comparison - and actually my pal who's ps3 it is, only has casino royale on blue ray so couldnt do any other comparison.

This could explain why I hadnt noticed this halo/ringing before, and was just enjoying Casino royale when i watched it rather than checkign for artefacts!
