Apple TV & Parental Lock

Is there a way to either lock or stop anyone playing inappropriate films on ATV? I'm in the process of re-encoding 200+ films and then thought about it, my last HTPC S/W & H/W combo allowed me to stop anything below a PG13 from being played unless I entered an unlock code. Is there anyway of restricting what the kids can playback?

Hmm ... you can apply restrictions in the iTunes library but not immedaitely sure how you can apply to ATV outside of the iTunes streams ...

Ahh - found something - think you need to run handbraked/ripped films through 'Lostify' or 'MetaX' in order to add parental control meta-tags ...

You then enable 'parental controls' in the settings menu on the ATV ...

Re: Apple TV & Parental Lock

Ahhh perfect, I have been tagging with MetaX but I dont have the ATV yet so didn't know it had those in the menu's, what are the options? Is it along the lines of "restrict playback for anything PG13 and over for example" (deliberate mistake in the original post for PG 13 and under, d'oh), and how do you override it?

Thanks Jon.

Re: Apple TV & Parental Lock

yes, you can block any ratings and below.

so eg PG-13, or R I think are the main ones.

I have some....interesting material that is MetaX'd as Jericho the TV series (but it isn't) and is rated R. I then have the ATV set to require a passcode (4-digits) for that.

Works fine, but be aware that the ATV still lets you browse the content. So you see the packshot and item name/description.

Hi Steve,

I am sure this is done via the Settings Option at the Bottom of your Apple TV Menu. Look for Parental Controls. IIRC, once you have set your restrictions with regards to the level of Ratings people have access to, it then asks you for a Pin to protect this.

Regards

Re: Apple TV & Parental Lock

Thanks but what I meant was how do you enter the code when you've no input device apart from the remote control?

Hi Steve,

You enter the code by pushing up and down on the Apple remote. You have a row of four numbers, then a Confirm box at the end.

Regards
