DVD's to Apple TV

I want to 'back up' my DVD collection to my iTunes library so I can watch them on my Apple TV. Can anybody recommend a good application to do this. I will be doing this on my Mac Pro.

Handbrake or IVI

I use makeMKV for straight rips

Does makemkv make m4v as well?

No you need to convert it afterwards, unless you go the XBMC route. Sorry should of specified this is no good unless you jailbreak.

Personally I would rip the discs to mkv with Makemkv and then use ivi (mac app store) to encode for iTunes. Ivi is such a good application, I recommend it to everyone.

+1

Very good indeed.

Handbreak is a one stop shop - rip and encode to m4v (h264 + AC3/AAC) all in one app. Good for single rips

Or if you want to do a bunch, use MakeMKV to rip to mkv (original codecs) then queue up a bunch in Hamdbrake (or IVI if you wish) and leave to convert overnight

I used to use HandBrake, and still do now and again, but prefer IVI these days as it has support for MetaData which HandBrake doesn't natively.

I also find IVI better because if the source video and audio is compatible it will just create an m4v container and just copy the content untouched. Also if just Audio changes required it will copy the video untouched. Saves an awful lot if time that way!

HandBrake is also very good but ageing now in additional features.

^ Thats what I use MKV Tools for; passthrough video and convert audio (usually from 6ch AAC to 6ch AC3)

I use RipIt to rip the DVD to the iMac then Handbrake to convert it to ATV 2 format

Ease the pressure on your optical drive ;)

My optical drive packed up due to overuse....so it does happen.

Convenience is another reason if you have several DVD's to process.
I use RipIt to rip the discs to a folder on my desktop,
and then queue them up and let Handbrake convert them overnight while I sleep

Otherwise I'd have to get up at 3 hour intervals whilst waiting for my optical drive to die.:rotfl:

Last year, I sold over 400 of my DVDs on here, after ripping 300 of them to my media PC for ATV2.

I used several softwares for ripping, but found the fastest way was to rip with one, and convert with another.

DVDFAB would rip a DVD in 10mins (I found others would take 30-60mins) to VOB. This meant I could rip 6 an hour, and would maybe do 25 a night.

I then used Handbrake to batch convert overnight to .mp4/.m4v

This was the quickest way I could get through 25+ rips a night over a couple of weeks.

MetaX was then used to tag all files.

You do realise that is illegal don't you :suicide: I most definitely still have all the DVDs and Blu Ray that I ripped for personal use...

Mine are in storage too. My parents kindly loaned me a space in their garage.

Matt_C 26-02-2012 11:01 AM

how do you make a "Movies" playlist? Does it play movies files back to back, continuous?

The same way you'd create a music playlist, and yes it does.

Matt_C 26-02-2012 10:07 PM

I shall try when my NAS drives return and everything is back up and running! But I'm sure I tried to add movies to a playlist before, and have that playlist sync over to my ATV so I can put a whole bunch of music videos on rotation, but couldn't get it to work

DVD ripping is disabled in the mac app store version of IVI (according to their web site), so you have to buy direct from the developer. It's about £4 dearer.

Gazza

That's why I rip the disc to mkv with makemkv and then use ivi to make it iTunes friendly, as I said above.
