Post How to make the perfect DVD backup of your Leopard DVD(s)

Hi all

After some in-depth research I thought I would share my findings on the above subject.

I wanted to create a perfect DVD backup of my Mac OS X Leopard DVD (having an image on my HD wasn't enough).

Contrary to popular opinion, simply using Disk Utility to copy your Mac OS X Leopard DVD misses out the Windows Bootcamp Drivers which are obviously essential to many users.

NOTE: To do this, you have to use MS Windows and a program called IsoBuster (I am running VMWare Fusion for my Windows needs).

Remember that the Leopard DVD is a Dual Layer (DL) DVD so ensure you buy some good quality DL Disks before you start.

Process:
  1. On your Windows machine, download and install IsoBuster from www.isobuster.com (Once installed, just use the free version, no need to buy).
  2. Open IsoBuster and put your Mac OS X Leopard DVD into your DVD drive.
  3. Once loaded, right click on 'DVD' on the left hand menu and 'Extract DVD <image> as User Data (*.tao, *.iso)
  4. Chose a name for your image i.e. Leopard DVD Disk 1 and chose the 'Save As' type to .iso
  5. Now click on 'Save' and wait for the image to be created
  6. Once complete, copy/move the image to your Mac and open Disk Utility
  7. Go to File > Open Disk Image and navigate to the image you moved across
  8. Now clcik on 'Burn'
  9. Once complete, you should have an identical copy of your Leopard DVD including Boot Camp drivers

That's how I did it anyway and have used this method a few times with complete success. I have fully restored my Mac using the newly created disk and worked perfectly. There could be alternatives so please share your experiences as you see fit.

This was all done on my 2008 White Macbook 2.4Ghz C2D.

Hope that helps someone!

Dave

Great tutorial, thanks.

Question though, would Using Toast Titanium to copy the disc miss the Bootcamp files too?

Good question Shoka, I am sure it will do the job.

A few Google searches suggested that it can be done using Toast but as I have never used Toast, I can't comment.

Have you tried it?

I haven't no, I have a disc image on 2 separate external hard drives so never tried it, might give it a go this afternoon though for a conclusive answer.

Re: How to make the perfect DVD backup of your Leopard DVD(s)

Open IsoBuster -> right click "DVD" on the left -> choose "Extract DVD <Image>" -> and then User Data (*.tao, *.iso).

It works fine for the 2 of my bundled Mac OS X 10.5.2 Discs (Mainland china distribution). I got 2 backups: Mac OS X Install Disc 1.tao (md5: a45ee41950c89e0403399d4d8b8a5f8d sha1: ed45f221faab25226d5731223cea2e9add513b39) and Mac OS X Install Disc 2.tao (md5: dd980cb0451b959fa1a9d716192b78de sha1: 39ec779fbd8792326b84c904205a0470ec3f431d) with their respectively associated cue files.

Several times of extracting has been tested resulting the same checksums via a proper DVD driver. But some drivers may get different result between two tries even fail to recognize the 2nd DVD medium as a DVD+RW one. This can be attributed to hardware inconsistence according to my knowledge.
