HELP!! Online Embedded Video's Causing Massive Overheating On My Macbook Pro!

Hi All,

I have a MBP Intel C2D 2.2 running Tiger 10.4.11. I tend to use Safari as my web browser but have recently noticed that whenever I watch any form on online video's (youtube etc), the temperature of my MBP goes through the roof easily reaching and exceeding 80șC at which point I get scared silly and quit watching anything. I had a look at Activity Monitor and the Safari %CPU figure is also approaching 80% with 16 Threads, Real Memory running at 735 MB and Virtual Memory running at about 1.3 GB.

I have no idea what this means but the scrolling CPU graph at the bottom is nearly full and the CPU idle figure goes from around mid 90% to between 21% and 40%. This is just one example but put here to give you experts who know what it all means an idea.

Please can someone tell me what is going on and how I can correct it? I am not that techie with computers but am happy to follow step by step directions - I am really afraid my MBP is going to melt or burn up something inside.

Thank You!

Suave!

Interesting.

I have a White Macbook 2.4GHz and it does the same when watching embedded video i.e. You Tube.

I must admit, it doesn't do it all the time though but I do get the symptoms you have explained.

It's the Adobe Flash player isn't it? iirc there isn't (or wasn't) a Mac optimised version. Check for updates - i think mine is ok now.

Hi,

Where is the Adobe Flash Player & how do I find out if it is OK? What should I do?

Re: HELP!! Online Embedded Video's Causing Massive Overheating On My Macbook Pro!

Hi All,

I did the adobe thing and made no difference - it now seems even just basic web browsing via Safari is causing a noticeable heat rise let alone watching online stuff - my mbp is pretty baking most of the time - I tried cleaning with Onyx and that has not helped either. From Activity Monitor, how can I tell which processes may be causing any issues and how do I get rid of them? What else could be causing this?

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch

You can stop processes by selecting the activity and pressing the stop icon in the top left of the window.

Hi,

If I do do this, what will happen and is it safe?

It just closes the process you selected. Will be safe so long as you only close user processes and not the system ones.

Re: HELP!! Online Embedded Video's Causing Massive Overheating On My Macbook Pro!

MacBook Pro's are fine operating at high temperatures, three digits and you should be really worried.

You also have the older hotter MBP, my Penryn can easily reach 70C with a couple Apps open, and 95+ When Gaming! It does seem weird, but there hasnt been anything bad happen yet.

If its a recent thing, try Firefox, or maybe a fan has gone (The MacBooks get hot because they have a single fan (Alu's excluded) where as the MBP has 2)
