Re: Recommend me a newsreader

Cool, be interesting to hear how you get on.

I've got one of my saved searches from Newzbin into it. To do that I had to control click the RSS icon and copy the feed address because clicking it kept changing the url to feed:// and not http://

The RSS help wiki is a little useful too.

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

bump!

So I now have a mac mini sitting under the TV and it makes sense for that to handle newsgroup downloads as thats where the stuff will be played, and it saves me having to leave my MBP on all the time. Ideally I'd set up sabnzbd+ on it but be able to bookmark/download stuff from my MBP, as well as use rss feeds from elsewhere.

Can someone write up how they have it set up? Also, newzbins is an invite only site, anyone got one going spare?

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

SABnzbd+ really needs no set up, all you do is put your Newzbin account details in and the frequency at which to poll for bookmarks. It will work exactly as you want, I bookmark on my iPhone and they are downloaded and extracted by the time I get home

PM me your email address for an invite to Newzbin.

I use Unision, never had a problem with it.

Would recommend it

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

Im confused by Newsgroups

Am I right in thinking that I need to subscribe to a newsgroup (I have been recommended Astraweb), then something to download the files (SABnzbd+) and then another thing (nzbs.org) to actually search for the files?

If that is right how do I set nzbs.org to only search Astraweb?

Or am I getting it completely wrong?

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

nearly there

I subscribe to newshosting which is like astraweb. they are just a hosting service which is where your client (sabnzbd+, newsleecher etc) downloads it from - you put in the address, your username/password etc.

you can search internally in these apps, or use nzbs. These are basically text files that list all the little files that are needed to be put together to make the big file. You can get these from various places - eg nzbs.org. You download an nzb to your computer and then the client (sabnzbd, whatever) looks at it and then goes and downloads the actual files from astraweb

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

Thanks for the info, i'll get there its just totally baffling at first

Ive signed up with Astraweb, downloaded sabnzbd+ and put in my Astraweb SSL server details now how do I now search Astraweb within sabnzbd+?

I searched nzbs.org for something and clicked on the download link and its started to download but very slowly (150kps), is that searching Astraweb and is the download coming through Astraweb or somewhere else?

Sorry

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

sabnzbd is just a downloader, you need a news reader to get the file info from any newsgroup.

I use Newsbin via my Windows XP virtual machine, but there are bound to be a number of OS X alternatives. Since the appearance of NZB files my header downloading (what it's called when downloading file information from newsgroups) is almost zero. Also remember that most (if not all) Usenet providers charge your account against any header downloads in you GB limit, if you have a limit that is.

If you want a nice web based alternative then you might want to give Easynews a go. It will display all the file available in newsgroups in your browser. You can also use it to zip files together or create your own NZB files. Only costs £6+ a month for 30 GB's

As for a Usenet provider I swear by BlockingNews. Had zero issues in over 6 months. No fair use policy or download limit and always get my full bandwidth any time of the day.

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

wow, newzbin is a bit tricky! Any pointers?

Do you just use it to browse and then click to bookmark instead of download (then sabnzbd gets it later), or do you set up saved searches or the watchdog thing?

If you've subscribed you can find what you want and generate an nzb file which will load the files to grab directly into your client (Unison user here).

I do a bit of saved searches (for series that are on going) and bookmarking if I'm away from my home computer and for instant NZB grabbing for stuff that I want immediately.

I'm trying the RSS feeds aswell which (touch wood) seems to have worked.

Newzbin has documentation which is worth reading through (Here). It gets easier once you use it more.

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

just got it set up on my mac mini. its successfully queued something up but its paused until 11pm when my ISP stops measuring usage. Hopefully it'll download it, and rename it to the correct format for plex. but lets see :P

I've also just discovered a sabnzbd+ plugin for plex, so I can browse, search and queue up downloads while still in plex. result.

Still haven't found a foolproof way to get it to download eg episode 12 of top gear but then not download the other 18 versions of episode 12. nzbs.org doesn't seem to give enough accuracy in the searches, not sure about newzbins yet - does sabnzbd+ have something that can help?

Yes, you'll need to look at the RSS feeds like we started doing a while back.
I'm not sure about nzbs.org as I don't use it but I do use Newzbin.
It takes a little bit of setting up but I'll try and write up a guide tomorrow.

You just have to bookmark what you want downloaded in Newzbin and set up SabNZBd to get any bookmarks from Newzbin and then automatically uncheck the bookmarks when they have downloaded.

I have my overnight mini PC set up to load SabNZBd paused when switched on and have a schedule entry within it to start it at 01:00 which is the start of my ISP's meter free time and then to pause again at 06:00. I then have an XP task that runs at 07:30 to shut the PC down, giving SabNZBd time to finish any extracts/copies or deletes.

SabNZBd is set up to extract all the files, delete all .par/.sfv and .nfo files and then move the download folders to the correct folders on my NAS.
Can't even remember the last time I VNC'd onto my mini PC as it all just works

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

How do you get it to move the files at the end? is that just the 'complete' folder?

Seemed to work ok. Woke up and it had downloaded the bookmarked file, renamed it with show and season folders and even put it in a 'tv' folder

I might even adjust the destination folder to point to the plex watch folder so shows turn up automatically. I assume that if a folder exists, sabnzbd will just use it so if I make a mistake the worst that happens is I have two 'house' folders which plex won't care snout anyway.

Think I'll stick with manual bookmarking for now. It works and I can play with RSS later if needed

I think I can finally stop leaving my mbp on all night and let the mini handle it. Might rope the mbp into helping with DVD ripping duties though

In the Categories section change the tv entry to point to the folder you want the finished directory to be moved to. If left at the default it goes in the Completed Download Folder: in the Folders section.

I've never seen the need to use the RSS feed so no idea how it works. I always have access to a web browser so just login to Newzbin and bookmark the things I want to download.

Edit: Also, I get it to email me when things are finished Handy when I'm on nightshift to know when things are finished and how long they took.

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

nice, and working - although it doesn't get the naming particularly right (at least not for Plex to scan the files properly)

Is there any way to get it to not put the nzbs, nfos and sfvs in the destination folder, and just put the avi in there?

as it stands there is still a fair bit of housework to do with the files once they are finished.

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

Just get it to delete all the file you don't require from the finished folder.
It's the Cleanup List: in the General tab.

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

I've set sabnzbd+ to email me at the end of each job, and its sending me quite a few "SABnzbd failed to complete job" messages. I've had a quick look and they still seem to play in VLC. Will I have problems during the video, or is that message not necessarily to do with the main files? Any way to check?

Re: Recommend me a newsreader

Ive finally got SABnzbd+ set up to move completed files to where I want them and its working well

How do I "subscribe" to TV shows so they automatically download? I thought by reading earlier posts that I just bookmarked them in Newzbin but ive noticed overnight that a new episode of a show had gone up but SABnzbd+ hadnt picked it up so I have had to manually set it to download just now.

Also, ive downloaded a couple of files which I cant seem to convert to AppleTV format for some reason, they just crash Handbrake mid-way through the conversion, any ideas? Never had this problem with anything from TV Torrents....
