Problems sending e-mails

Hello, I installed Mountain Lion on my 2009 iMac (24" aluminium case version) a week or so ago. All was going well until the afternoon of the 7th of August when Apple Mail stopped sending e-mails, I can still receive them OK plus internet access is fine (using gmail to send when I need to at present).

The only thing I did different that day was to install AndyInvoicer as I have a small photography business that seems to be getting going a bit, the writer of that app has assured me that it does not have any interface with Apple Mail and can not see how it could be the problem.

I sent several e-mails that morning but am now struggling, my internet provider is talk talk who I contacted but because all was working well with their service decided it was nothing to do with them. 10 minutes after putting the phone down I had a call from someone with a far eastern accent who said he could sort my problem out, it turned out he wanted £80, I said no so the reply was "how about £50 ?" I told him where to shove his advice (should have bargained him down to a fiver I suppose).

I won the moral high ground but can still not send e-mails. I am sure it is tied up with user names and passwords - but can I find what they were ? NO !

Have tried to see if Time Machine could help but to no avail at present.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bill

It might not be relevant but Google have acknowledged issues with Gmail on some iOS devices in the past few days (has hit me) but haven't heard if it extends to OS X.

If you access Gmail in Safari can you send/receive there?

Hi, yes, sending and receiving Gmail via Safari is fine.

Somehow I think I have to figure out what my user name and password was.

Try unchecking the SSL option in Mail's SMTP settings for the account you are having issues with. Also try using port 25 and set Authentication to "None".

Your username will be your mail address associated with the account. How are you managing to use the web GMail interface if you don't know your username and password? You can use the web interface to have Gmail send your your password to your email address if you've forgotten the password:

I forgot my password - Gmail Help

Did the guy who rang you know exactly what you were having issues with? If not then he was a chancer trying to kid you into thinking he had access to your computer. If he was more specific about your issues then you've malware on your Mac. In either instance, ignore him and do not engage with him.

If Safari knows your gmail password, you should be able to retrieve it via Keychain Access. Open up Keychain Access (/Applications/Utilities/) and type 'gmail' into the application's search box.

Double click on the gmail entry (there may be more than one) and select 'show password' on the window that opens (it will ask for your admin password).

If the password(s) it reveals are the ones that you've already tried, you have another problem.

Hi, sorry, I should have made myself clear, the Gmail account is not the one I am having problems with, its my main one that is doing silly things, the gmail one was only really set up for my iPhone when I first got it.

The account I am having problems with has been through several incarnations - no real idea what I should be doing to be honest.
