Perhaps a play in the Apple store will help. Or it might not, lol.
I fully intended to get a 15" MBP last October, but after visiting the store I was just drawn to the 13" for how easily it sat on my lap. It just was the perfect laptop size. I bought a 21.5" iMac for upstairs at the same time and I never use it.

I've put an SSD into the 13" and with 8Gb Ram + with the 2.7 ghz i7 it's got more than enough power to last me.

Lol. I actually put my MBP up for sale to buy a new release, but didn't get asking price, so stuck an SSD in instead.

Hi All,

Overall, I am pretty happy now that I managed to get a 17" UMBP a few weeks ago - I am so use to the size & at least I can upgrade certain parts of it! Tbh, I think a 17" Retina Display MBP with SSD etc would have been cost prohibitive for even die hard fans!

Suave!

Have they fixed/changed the hinge on the MacBook Airs?

I'm tempted by a light-use laptop, but the know of at least three people that had their hinges break on the old model.

The hinge has been changed since the late 2010 models or are you talking about those models?

By the looks of it, its BTO only if you want to customise it, as the ram is soldered directly to the logic board, the battery is glued into the case, with no access to the track pad cable.

I had a play with one today at the Apple store. The screen was lovely. I even played around with the different retina resolutions which did show more coverage at higher resolutions and the text was still very eligible.

It didn't seem very bulky nor heavy. I've currently got a Sony Vaio Z 13".

I did notice the laptop had several scratches on it already and it had only been on display a few hours. Hope is not prone to scratches easily.

I think I'm getting one.

Got to get a RMBP, doing overtime like mad so I can afford one, should be able to afford one by the end of next month at this rate. Should get some money back from my 2011 MBP also.

As much as i would love to have one I think i'll resist and wait until there are more third party apps that are retina compatible, by that time they may well make the next macbook air retina as well as a power oomph.

My old fashioned 2011 MBP with 8GB RAM , i5 and 120 GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD will have to suffice for now

the non-retina display Macbook Pros still sport an optical drive (with Apple's current trajectory, my bet is that the mid-2012 Macbook Pro Non-Retina will be the last generation of the MBP to feature an optical drive)

Really pondering the retina MacBook pro but the more I think about it the more concerned I am that there are no user serviceable parts. If I go for it I'll have to push the boat out cost wise to make sure it's as future proof as possible but say if my battery starts playing up, as my MacBook on has twice before which I easily changed myself, how "bad" is it going to have to get before AppleCare change the whole unit at considerable cost to themselves? I can't help thinking that their idea of what is acceptable and what my idea is isn't going to match up given the massive sums of money involved for them to have to dish out a whole new MacBook over something relatively simple...

I'm also thinking about waiting for iMacs,

I'm torn between a bigger screen or having portability as an option...

I already have. A 24" acd so could dock the MacBook to that...

Decisions decisions

Also agree about the retina MacBook pro needs maxxing to ensure longevity

Weird to think the retina MacBook is more powerful than my mac pro!!

lol

I'm beginning to think the best thing to do is always be 1-2 steps behind the latest an greatest. So, wait for new models to come out and buy the old model.

I'm glad the shipping has slipped to 3-4 weeks, it's helping me not to flex the credit card.

LOL Yes, that was one of the things helping me to stop hit that button on Monday, that and the fact I had to pick myself up on actually considering a £3K+ laptop

As I would now never consider buying a MBP without an SSD I would actually save money by buying a Retina Display model over a standard 15" with SSD & hi-res screen.
