How do I stream a live Football match from iMac to my TV, wirelessly ?

Hi guys,

How do I stream a live Football match from internet to my TV?

I have an iMac in the lounge and my TV is a few metres away, and I'm wanting to stream a live video for example a live football match from the Internet onto my TV.

How easy is it to be done?

How can it be done with an iMac?

What would I need to buy?

Cheers

Firstly, do you have a Sky subscription? If so, you can very easily watch live matches on Sky (or anything on Sky) via their SkyGo website/app.

Most computers/laptops you would just need to connect a VGA cable from the VGA output and switch the displays .
I do it at work from my netbook to an unused monitor. But you have an iMac and I don't think Apple want you to do that, looking at the options they give you

No problem with a PC

I'd want to be able to do it wirelessly.

Is there no way of doing it via say an apple tv or mac mini?

Cheers

Just get this:

New Mini Display Port to HDMI HD TV Cable Lead Adapter For Apple Mac MacBook UK | eBay

And use a HDMI to the TV.

The only way it can be done on an iMac.

Job done.

Thats no good though, as I don't want a wire going along the floor.

It HAS to be wireless.

http://www.veebeam.com/home.html this is a USB dongle plugged in to mac and receiver in tontv. It can stream media from the mac and you can mirror the mac on the tv , al be it with a slight delay between the two pictures.

Do you have to have the Mac by your side when playing the video to the TV? Would you get away with a wireless Keyboard and mouse and use a wired connection between your Mac and TV?

It's an iMac, I can't move that about.

I'm not interested in a wired connection, I'd have to take up the carpet and I'd rather not have the hassle of that.

The veebeam seems interesting, but I'm wanting to know if what I am asking can be done via a Mac mini or apple tv?

Cheers

The new operating system coming this summer, has AirPlay for macs. When that's released, apple tv should stream it wirelessly for you. Only a few months away but probably after the season is finished ironically.

veebeam doesn't support Lion according to the website.

Personally i think your best bet would be to buy a mini displayport to hdmi cable, and then use one of these....

Xenta Wireless HDMI Kit - WHDI HDMI Transmitter and.. | Ebuyer.com

plug the cable from the mac into the transmitter

connect the reciever to your tv

voila, wireless picture on your tv.

Or if you're using Lion you can use a piece of software called 'AirParrot' to do this now...

Works quite well streaming wirelessly from my Mac downstairs to Apple TV2 up in the bedroom.

Interesting.

How well has this worked for you?

Would this allow me to stream a live football match from say Safari/Firefox mirrored onto the Apple TV, then view on my Panasonic TV?

How well realistically would this work?

Cheers

Haven't had the chance to use it too much (been busy decorating) but tried it out with iPlayer in Safari, an EyeTV connected to my Mac and iTunes video content and they all worked surprisingly well.

Hi, just set up my IMAC and this subject is of great interest. Basically, we have Apple TV, we bought that to connect the PC to the TV so we could stream football - uh uhhh!

So now we have an IMAC so will I, in theory, be apple to stream football easily and then mirror it to my TV downstairs via Apple TV? Or is there some sort of software I will need to play the football anyway. Its difficult to test because the season is yet to start.

If you've a Mac made since mid 2011, Mountain Lion and either an ATV2 or ATV3 then you can use the inbuilt AirPlay Mirroring feature of Mountain Lion:

About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion

How to use AirPlay Mirroring in Mountain Lion | How To - CNET

Mountain Lion and Airplay Mirroring?

If your Mac was built earlier and isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring or if you are not running Mountain Lion, then software such as AirParrot or Reflection can do much the same thing:

AirParrot - AirPlay your Mac or PC's screen to AppleTV

Reflection.app - AirPlay mirroring to your Mac or PC, wirelessly.

All the above will mirror exactly what is on your Mac's desktop on a TV connected to an ATV.

No, not unless you Jailbreak it and this isn't an option with the ATV3. Even if jailbroken, additional modifications will be required and not as simple as you suggest.

You didn't say that, you said:

Did you think to ask whether the OP's Mac can facilitate AirPLay Mirrpring or if he even has or intends on using Mountain Lion? Which ATV does he have? If the first gen ATV then he cannot facilitate AirPLay to Mirror to it.

So no, not as simple as you suggest and I already outlined this prior to your post

The OP doesn't even have an ATV he has a TV & an iMac & wants to wirelessly stream video from one to the other. An ATV is the obvious choice & presumably if the OP were to buy one it would be the latest model

It's just as simple as you yourself described using Air Play in Mountain Lion or 3rd-party equivalent for earlier versions of OS X.

It's probably not a first for AVForums but it certainly is unusual for a poster to disagree with his own advice to start an argument
