USB Stick showing wrong size...

Hello guys, I've been messing about with different NAS software on my 8GB Sony USB stick. it's now only showing as 4GB I think it's due to a small locked/hidden Linux partition on it from the NAS software, how can I recover this please? I'm on Lion, thanks!

Open Terminal and type:

Quote:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Followed by:
Quote:
killall Finder
Can you see the hidden files now?

To disable just do the reverse:
Quote:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

Are you talking about recovering that partition for use under Lion? Then use DiskUtility>Partition and delete/resize the partition(s). You should back up files you want first, even though DiskUtility can (under suitable conditions) perform the re-partitioning non-destructively on those you want.

Sorry guys I just realised that what I wrote is a bit confusing, I'm looking to recover the missing 4GB of storage space (and completely format the stick), thanks

That's what Partition (in DiskUtility) do...

edit: well, not strictly true, but the effect of re-formatting the USB stick as a single volume is re-partitioning it and then "sticking" in the chosen filesystem.

The problem is that the 4GB partition isn't showing in disk utility (It's showing as a 4GB stick), so I'm not sure how to free put he space...feeling a bit stupid right now :P

Download a Live/Bootable copy of GParted onto Disc/USB then boot into that and erase the USB stick.

GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD

Ok I've put the gparted file onto the USB stick, when I go into System preferences>startup disk, my SSD is there but the USB stick isn't as a bootable device, any idea? (First time trying to boot from a USB on OSX), thanks.

Edit - Is that only for booting OSX installations?
