Ok, it looks like I am not making my point very well...

This sums it up better, with some of the comments being issues for me too:

Breaking out of the iPhoto Folder Structure — Unseemly Raptor

The main reason I want to keep my file structure is that I use my photos drive on more than just macs, but PCs too. Also, if I ever move away from iPhoto, the file structure is a hassle to export. When I export it just exports thousands of images into one big folder, not separated by events into folders.

If you want an alt editing app look at Acorn from Flying Meat.

That makes a lot more sense as to why you would want to maintain some control over the file structure etc...

If you find the iPhoto library file in Finder, right-click and select 'show package contents' you'll get to the date based file structure that iPhoto uses and you can simply copy and paste that anywhere you want.

As Tenex pointed out earlier, don't make any changes in here as you could corrupt your whole library!

Unless of course I have made any edits or added effects... then it is split between a number of folders. A pain in the arse.

Thing is that just when we 'solve' all your complaints the next winge is on its way ;-) I'm almost getting a feeling you are doing this on purpose...But hey the benefit of the doubt, if this new requirement worries you, use the pro version Aperture and that will solve it as well...

If you import a series of images into iPhoto and then Edit the ones you want and then delete the ones you don't, you can then Export the images back out of iPhoto into a folder of your choosing.

You could Batch Rename the photos in the Event to a more friendly name and then File > Export. You even get a choice of file type and file naming. Once done you can delete the images from iPhoto and then empty the trash.

None of the issues I have have been solved, and looks like they cant be. There are work arounds for most of the problems, but the whole point of using an app like this for me was to avoid work arounds.

Mr Sossige - Looks like that would be what I have to do. A bit of a pain in the arse when you have 100s of events.

Initially it will be, but once you get caught up and up to date it'll be a cinch.

You could just go through the library doing batch renames and then do one really big export when done.

Ultimately I don't think Apple are going to rewrite iPhoto. I'd consider adjusting your workflow to suit the software until you find a more suitable alternative.

But you aren't using the app in the way it was designed to operate ie. as a repository for your pics, you wish to use it only as an editor and to that extent just use Acorn or Elements or Pixelmator or any number of alternatives - all of them will perform as you want.

I honestly don't see the point of using iPhoto as a mere editor, that's not what it was intended for and would be akin to using Photoshop for nothing more than changing file names.

Exactly, nail on the head. It does exactly what it is supposed to be doing, the editor is there for people that use iPhoto as a photo storage place... Not really for importing a photo to edit it... Ofcourse it can be done, but it is not what it is there for.
