Hooking up a PS3 or a 360 to the new 27" display

The above is a quote taken from Apples website....

Does this mean that it would be possible to hook up a 360 or a PS3 to the new 27" imac?

If so that would be fantastic...(and even more justification to buy one!!

It should be when the cables become available but I haven't see any expected release date quoted.

My mate went pass the store on the way to work,
and the guy at the store said it ,
only the 27" model will accept video input,
and will support all video sources....

but he doesn't know about the cables adapters yet...

This FAQ page makes for interesting reading. Hope that proves useful to gain more understanding on DisplayPort, it's market positioning and usage. Certainly made things a lot clearer for me.

Texex: The iMac specs show DisplayPort output support for VGA and DVI, and dual-link DVI, but nothing mentioned for input except DisplayPort itself. Have you seen any other information regarding getting video in via DisplayPort?

Anyone: How would you monitor the input on the iMac? Is there a new utility or would this be a 3rd party app do you think?

You can get DisplayPort to HDMI adapters so you'd think you could get this to work the other way round. No?

Read somewhere that you have to have the iMac powered on to get the screen up (suprise suprise), but no idea if playing something through the input takes over the whole screen or appears as a window on the desktop.
Would be best IMO if it took over the whole screen and the iMac could go to sleep leaving the monitor on.

Guess that's one sale they'll be missing from here. Really interested in getting one if I could have used it for my Xbox360 and maybe a blu-ray player.

If their is any sort of input processing delay it will be useless for gaming I would think. Possible lip-sync issues watching blu-ray unless you take the audio in as well?

Plus it also has to deal with any HDCP issues, every 2 seconds! Maybe there has been some sort of problem with the box so they've pulled it temporarily.

For sure, the only way you're going to get anything IN the iMac's DisplayPort socket is using a DisplayPort signal, so an adapter such as this Belkin thing is the ticket to enabling this to happen.

As for Lip Sync, I don't think that will be an issue as long as PCM is sent over the cable, which may be mandatory to get it working anyway. Otherwise the iMac would need to decode any incoming bitstream, and I seriously doubt bitstreams are acceptable input.

They both have mini displayport sockets, but only the 27" models can accept inputs via them.

Suggest you read the spec again mate. There's no DP socket on the 21.5" model. Only got limited time this morning so can't find a picture of the back of a 21.5" model, but there's been plenty of press about this already.

This to me suggests the 21.5" model has a mini displayport, but it is just not capable of input, like the 27"? Of all the reviews i have read nothing has mentioned the lack of mini displayport on the 21.5" model.

iMac line updated with 16:9 displays, quad-core Core i5 / i7 model

This also suggests the 21.5" models have a mini display port.

Apologies. Just downloaded the manual and you're right, the 21.5" has output capability via its DisplayPort socket only. (Source: iMac_Late2009_UG.pdf Pg23)

However, this thread is about using the socket for input, and the 21.5" model does not have this feature.

As per the post two above you, that is the same unit and it can be had cheaper...Not that expansive though, and cheaper than buying a second screen...And when you read it, the box is not the limitation it is the EDID settings of the iMac...

Just stumbled across this thread and wondered if anyone has any more up to date info re this...

I'd love to get my PS3 working through my 27'' imac as it'll save me having to buy another tv!

Any links/advice would be fantastic
