I'll admit it, I really don't get the Dell Mini 5....Too big to put comfortably in your pocket, unless you wear clothes like a clown....But yet too small to do any actual work on it and when carrying a brief case you may as well get the size of an iPad or a laptop....
If you look at the lower link Dell is doing two other sizes as well. 5” is a bit less capable for some things but might be fine for others. An ipad or similar I wouldn’t be happy about getting out in some places in case it got stolen. A 5” device I might keep in my car’s glovebox or in the top of a daysack for similar things I’d use a PSP for. Music, gaming, maybe contacts, alarm clock, photos etc. I can currently use my phone for the internet and that’s much smaller than 5”. I wonder how many Archos 5’s have been sold? This months PC Pro is quite interesting. Apparently Dell has done some market research as to the sort of people that would actually buy an ipad type product and is going off that. The article isn’t on line yet but Dell reckons male gadget obsessed male 20-30 somethings would buy such a product and female housewives.
Finally how much are we talking? I wouldn’t pay £500 for a product as for that much I’d rather get a new laptop or smart phone or something else for that much. £200 I’d buy it as that’s around my impulse buy price and I wouldn’t worry if I didn’t actually use it too much. Somewhere in between I’d have to think about.
Just got one for my wife and I'll be getting the 3G version when it comes out. It just works and works well.
Will mean I don't have to take my laptop with me everywhere yet still be able to browse the web, use email and edit documents all on a decent sized screen.
I posted a review of the Joojoo here a couple of weeks ago - it wasn't flattering - and today it emerges that they've sold a total of 64 units since the launch. It won't be around long...
I'd just like not being in the position of sitting on my sofa in the evening, tv on and tapping away at my iPad then thinking, oh, I can't do that, I'll have to wait till I'm back at my PC again and again and again.
Re flying cars it's not quite the same As if all it needed was some software to be loaded into your car and it flew, then I'm sure you'd want it
To be honest (not being an Apple user at the moment) I'd be happy with OSX as I know I could do what I wanted with it.
My issue (I know) it going to be how much I feel tied down and restricted when using a tablet.
And could be it's downfall if people keep putting it to one side and having to fire up the laptop for the 1 thing the tablet won't do, but they want to do.
My x's kids for example would love an iPad, but they also love their flash games web sites, so they would be screwed.
How much did a long one mean for the Microsoft Courier? Or the Slate?
Well, the Courier probably never existed in the 1st place
And the Slate was doomed to Windows 7 failure.
Whilst I'm jumping up and down in readiness for my ipad next week, I'm also interested to see what else is coming out later in the year for us to either drool over or laugh at
I had an archos 9 for about two weeks. Bag of spanners. Couldn't run itunes video. Crap touch screen, dodgy software and firmware. They were alpha testing the device on the public if you ask me
I feel it's like a Jigsaw and the individual pieces are taking a while to put together.
The iPad has helped give everyone a market, set the standard if you must, and it's a very high one to hit.
They must know releasing anything will instantly draw comparisons against the iPad, so unless it's just a cheap device (aiming low) they'd be stupid to even try and release anything now as it would die before it even got of the starting blocks.
Nvidea has much of the chippery, Android can allow the OS and apps, it's all going to take time.
I'm guessing here, but possibly at some point in time it's going to be a trickle then all of a sudden the dam will burst and we'll have pages of Tablet reviews in the magazines.
As I say, I feel they are still working on the individual bits of the jigsaw, but once all the elements are in place what's to stop it?
I'm feeling very positive about all of this. The iPad I hope will set the bedrock and we're going to see a gradual but important change in media consumption (ok, for the minority at first due to price)
Android devices (I guess) will come in time, they will of course, try and out iPad Apple by adding missing options (card slots, usb ports etc) Apple will then come back with even better hardware to put Android back in it's place.
The only way is up (as Yazz would say)
And things can only get better (as D: Ream would say)
And we're right in there at the start of the (possible/hopeful) revolution
apple will also choose NOT to add certain features that some users consider de rigeur.. As is their way (express card slots on laptops anyone?) and it's important for people to remember that when thinking about future iterations of the iPad.. (or holding out for them)
So we are progressing into the years end, and still no real competition for a new generation of non-Apple tablets. Looking back at the early posts, and how many of those have not eventuated despite promise? JooJoo = stillborn; NotionInk Adam, cancelled; the odd Windows one gone without a mention; Archos 9 really gutless...
But there is light, two do seem like the will appear, and look promising and correct the faults of the iPad:

Cancelled?! since when? I saw an article on Slashgear as recent as a couple of weeks ago that seemed to be extremely positive.. They'd secured further investment capital, the devs had used the extra time to complete\refine their custom UI and manufacturing was slated for an October\November window or something like that..
..Still, a lot can change in a week or two i suppose I really hope you're wrong though.. The Adam's specs are pretty enticing and as much as I love my iPad.. A bit of solid competition can't hurt a one little bit
** EDIT ** A quick google search reveals no info about any cancellation, had a quick look at some of the usual tech websites/blogs.. No cancellation news there either...
As you say thing move fast, I must of missed something, as last time i checked they were in funding limbo, and some exec was saying they couldn't get funding. Sorry.
So any other promising products out there? A new kindle: yes not quite an iPad replacement, but they're going for cheaper and does books better.
Another day, another tablet announcement in the tech press.. I'm sure i'm not alone in wanting to see less vapourware and more concrete products.. Still, glad I got my pad when I did.. It gets a lof of use in this household, but I know the missus is holding out for the Adam above all others.. mainly due to the ebook reader potential of that transreflective Pixel Qi screen... A definite usp if ever there was one
I send my galaxy back, great potential but rubbish implementation. Needs unofficial roms and root fixes to become half useable and then it still has plenty of flaws like a great screen very visible in sunlight just not when you use auto brightness. Too many workarounds and manual patches required.
Well its launching with froyo so will wait and see ....I suspect the main drawback will be battery life & lack of HD apps for android to start of with ..personally I have the Galaxy S and I rooted / update firmware and applied the lag fix but out of curiosity ( i am a tinkerer ) as I was actually happy with it out of the box ..I have an Ipad as well so wont be going for this but out of all the tablets I've seen offered v the Ipad this looks the best of the bunch
