Totally - but if you can spare an optical input you don't notice the difference By the way all, three months owning one now and still loving it - especially seeing that the price has gone back up

i know, thats a strange one, with the price rise, as all the previous models hit rock bottom before they were replaced.
maybe it wont be replaced for a while yet,but early adopters got a bargain with the lower price.

I can imagine yeah, with currently having my audio from sky+ via optical; so with the majority of sky movies in 5.1 it is addictive

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre System *Part 2*

lamboluke, i found a way of getting the sound of the optical working while using sky+hd through hdmi. I connected the hdmi of the skyhd to DVD on the receiver, then the optical cable was connected to the TV optical input on the receiver. Then select DVD on your remote for the HDMI, and TV once the picture appears to get the sound. Hope it works for you as it did for me

Error 12 is a problem with the microphone,or its not connected, when it cant detect the speakers.
have you contacted sony about it again,or not bothered doing anything.?

I gone contact sony again over a few days.
I first wil type a sheet of paper with the problems, and put with the receiver.
But how is it posible that sudenly the mic is broken .
If they don't make it right this time, i will put the receiver back to the store and never sony again for me.

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre System *Part 2*

Has anyone seen any decent deals on this lately? Seems to be like £300 everywhere which is annoying when I almost bought it for £250 just before xmas but thought best wait.

I keep looking but haven't seen any deals or codes. If there any other systems I should consider for the £300 price which may be better/more availible?

I'm not sure if it's relevant but Sony TVs definitely went up in price after Christmas/January. Also, production has been cut somewhat because of the recession.

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre System *Part 2*

well, had mine set up for a month now, so glad i bought it.

im still confused with it tho (after reading the manual numerous times)

i dont have the manuals anymore for my other equipment so dont know what i should be changing in the settings on them

i have tosh EP-30 HD DVD, sony SD DVD, V+ and xbox 360,

and also what settings does everyone use to play xbox, watch films etc? ie the 'A.F.D'. PL, PLII MV, or 'movie' what do you find best?

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre System *Part 2*

just set the hd-dvd player up for lpcm audio over hdmi, the sony SD player, connect with optical i suppose(and connect it directly to tv for video), v+ for optical(DD5.1), and the xbox 360 for Dolby Digital over hdmi(5.1 from xbox 360 over hdmi).

as for settings, i tend to either use A.F.D, or Cinema "B".

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre System *Part 2*

thanks rotten, just been playing about with it this morning, currently watching batman begins, at vol level 40

yeah im going to connect my SD DVD direct to tv with optical at some point, at mo i run them all thru AMP (just switching HDMI cables between the DVD players)

yeah i tend to use cinema B the most, dont use A.F.D as it never transmits audio through the rear speakers.

i also use PLII MV a bit,

regarding settings

my SD DVD has these options:

1.DD output
- DD
- DD -> PCM

2.DTS output
- on
- off

3. p6khz PCM output
- on
-off

4.Mpeg output
-Mpeg
-Mpeg PCM

what do i need these setting on?

thanks again bud

if you are connecting with optical, pick DD, DTS to on, pcm96 to on, and pick mpeg pcm.

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre System *Part 2*

Have a problem with settings it seems.

My HTPC used to be connected direct to my TV with toslink to the amp. Due to the purchase of both a PJ and Sky HD I had to make a change and route the HTPC directly through the amp via HDMI for both video and audio.

No problems with that in itself but.... I am using a Harmony for all my remote requirements and once the AMP is switched off, my PC is going straight into sleep mode which does not sound so bad but, sometimes my PC cannot pick up the signal again until the HTPC is rebooted. As a workaround, I have set the AMP to remain on at all times BUT, this of course means I am not using the Harmony as it should be, I always have to use the amp control to switch it off at the end of the day.

I am using vista, not sure if there is a setting that I can disable this behavior.

Thanks in advance.

spdif relates to optical and digital coax only afaik - so it should be set to bitstream i think... It doesn't matter what you set it to if you're not outputting over optical though.

Your second option then i'm assuming relates to the hdmi output... So pcm would be best...

The last two screw with the audio by the sound of it so i'd leave those off...

ensure "audio output format (hdmi)" is set to "linear pcm" in ps3 video settings, dynamic range control is off in video settings, and redo your sound settings. AFAIK those soundfields should be disabled when outputting LPCM over hdmi from ps3, which is the setting to use for hd audio from ps3...
