Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre Sys REVIEW
Will HDMI carry Dolby-Digital 5.1 tho?
I didn't think the Sky HD box could output this over HDMI?
Thx

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre Sys REVIEW
Sorry i cant answer that... not a clue. I thought it was optical though that wouldnt carry 5.1 dolby but my knowledge is sketchy and basic to be fair.
Someone will know and hopefully reply with an answer though .

change your ps3 audio settings?
or as i suggested to Blik in a previous post use an optical cable from your ps3 to your receiver and digitally assign it to SA-CD/CD on your receiver and you should theoretically be able to select your 2ch stereo

yeah HDMI will not carry Dolby at the moment.
you got to attach your sky hd box direct to your tv (for video) and optical from sky hd to DDWG800 receiver so you get your 5.1

Does this mean to get 5.1 out of the ps3 or true 5.1 (as am i correct in saying this unit can give 'false 5.1' i.e playing out of all speakers...all be it not true 5.1) i would need to connect ps3 to this unit via optical or hdmi?

either the HDMI or Optical will work.
the PS3 will be able to decode the soundtrack and send it to the DDWG800 for 5.1 playback, plus you get to choose in the PS3 options if you want both video/audio thru HDMI or your audio through optical only.
the Sky+HD box limitations from my understanding is that it can't do what the PS3 does (decoding) through the HDMI connection and therefore you need to use separate cables (hdmi/optical) to get your 5.1 experience
correct me if i'm wrong

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre Sys REVIEW
can i just add, that for sky+/skyHD, you will need a video connection to your tv,like scart or hdmi(for HD), and an optical audio cable to get 5.1 from the sky boxes.
this isnt a shortcoming of hdmi,or any other connection, just sky's laziness and sheer stupidity.
for virgin media users, they can use a single hdmi lead, and get DD5.1 through hdmi.
for the ps3,connected to the 800, all you will need is an hdmi lead,as the ps3 is perfectly capable of sending DD5.1 or any other audio format directly through hdmi.

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre Sys REVIEW
cool i've added the consolidated information to the original post
if there are other equipment like the SKY+HD box that requires both optical/hdmi for the "full experience", list them out and we can add them in

yeap wire pushed in and held secure by the knobs is fine
i just had personal difficulty getting them secure in the beginning andm y gripe was why couldn't day standardise all the speaker points like those for the front speakers. But once that is done and you do not touch it, it's all good - so no need to waste time/money getting banana plugs unless you are really adamant about it then Rottenfox posted a link to some in the beginning few pages of this thread.

Yes Dolby 3/2.1 = 3 front channel, 2 rear, 1 subwoofer = Dolby 5.1
You're all set!

Re: Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Theatre Sys REVIEW
Cool so, HDMi for each and then Toslink Optical for the Sky HD box too.
Just been inter-webbing and I found a Sony HT-DDW900 series (specifically a 990 - seems to be 1080i and a 995 - which seems to be 1080p), any idea what the differences are between the models and are they significant enough to try and get the presumably 'newer' model?
Edit: Doesn't matter, just seen on here that the 990 is the US equivalent of the 890 - doh!
Thanks once again,
R4z
